Run an Online Repair of Microsoft 365 first, because Excel opens but cannot create the blank workbook; this repair replaces damaged Office components and applies to Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows.^1^
1. Repair Microsoft 365
Close all Office applications, then use the path for your Windows version:
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Select … next to it, and then select Modify.
- Select Online Repair → Repair.
- Complete the prompts, restart Windows if requested, and test Excel → Blank workbook.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office, and then select Modify.
- Select Online Repair → Repair.
- Complete the prompts and test Excel again.
Online Repair affects the complete Office installation, not only Excel. For an MSI-based installation, choose Repair and then Continue instead.^1^ Microsoft also identifies Online Repair as the direct solution when Excel opens to a blank screen.^2^
2. If repair does not fix it, test Excel in Safe Mode
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
excel /safe
- Select OK, and then try creating a blank workbook.
If the workbook opens in Safe Mode, an add-in, startup file, or customized Excel setting is interfering with normal startup.^3^
Start by testing COM add-ins:
- In Safe Mode, select File → Options → Add-ins.
- At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins and select Go.
- Clear every checkbox and select OK.
- Close Excel and reopen it normally.
- If blank workbooks now open, enable the add-ins individually, restarting Excel after each one, until the problem returns.
If disabling COM add-ins does not help even though Safe Mode works, use the automated Excel check below to test Excel add-ins, startup-folder files, and toolbar settings.
3. Run the Excel check troubleshooter
On Windows 10 or later, open Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 troubleshooters page and locate Excel check troubleshooter:
- Select its Start button.
- When prompted that the site is trying to open Get Help, select Open.
- Follow the instructions in the Get Help window.^4^
Before running its automated Safe Mode diagnosis, back up the Windows registry and files in Excel startup folders. The troubleshooter can modify registry entries, disable add-ins, move startup files, and rename custom toolbar files.^3^
4. Escalation
If Online Repair and the Excel check troubleshooter do not resolve the issue, use Contact us on Microsoft’s Excel blank-screen support page. If that option is not displayed, select Read article in browser, then use Contact us at the bottom.^2^
If Microsoft 365 or the computer is managed by your school and Modify, repair, or Get Help is blocked, contact the school’s Microsoft 365 or IT administrator to perform those steps.
