    Hi Deesha,

    Thank you for reaching out.

Since the Blank workbook option can be clicked but Excel does not open the workbook, the issue may be caused by damaged Microsoft 365 installation files or an Excel add-in that is preventing new workbooks from loading.

Please try the following steps in order:

    1. Run an Office Online Repair
    • Close Excel and all other Microsoft 365 applications.
    • Right-click the Start button and select Installed apps.

    User's image

    • Locate Microsoft 365 in the application list.
    • Select the three dots next to it, and then choose Modify.

    User's image

    • Select Online Repair, and then choose Repair.

    User's image

    • Allow the repair to finish, and restart your computer afterward.
    1. Launch Excel in Safe Mode
    • Press Windows key + R.
    • Enter the following command: excel /safe

    User's image

    • Select OK.
    • When Excel opens in Safe Mode, try creating a Blank workbook.
    1. Disable and isolate Excel add-ins

While Excel is open in Safe Mode:

    • Go to File > Options > Add-ins.
    • At the bottom of the window, select COM Add-ins from the Manage menu.
    • Select Go.
    • Clear all the checkboxes, and then select OK.

    • Close Excel and reopen it normally.
    • Test whether you can create a blank workbook.

I hope your issue gets resolved soon. Any updates would be greatly appreciated.

Run an Online Repair of Microsoft 365 first, because Excel opens but cannot create the blank workbook; this repair replaces damaged Office components and applies to Excel for Microsoft 365 on Windows.^1^

    1. Repair Microsoft 365

Close all Office applications, then use the path for your Windows version:

    Windows 11

    1. Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
    2. Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
    3. Select … next to it, and then select Modify.
    4. Select Online Repair → Repair.
    5. Complete the prompts, restart Windows if requested, and test Excel → Blank workbook.

    Windows 10

    1. Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
    2. Select Microsoft 365 or Office, and then select Modify.
    3. Select Online Repair → Repair.
    4. Complete the prompts and test Excel again.

Online Repair affects the complete Office installation, not only Excel. For an MSI-based installation, choose Repair and then Continue instead.^1^ Microsoft also identifies Online Repair as the direct solution when Excel opens to a blank screen.^2^

    2. If repair does not fix it, test Excel in Safe Mode

    1. Press Windows key + R.
    2. Enter:
    excel /safe

    1. Select OK, and then try creating a blank workbook.

If the workbook opens in Safe Mode, an add-in, startup file, or customized Excel setting is interfering with normal startup.^3^

    Start by testing COM add-ins:

    1. In Safe Mode, select File → Options → Add-ins.
    2. At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins and select Go.
    3. Clear every checkbox and select OK.
    4. Close Excel and reopen it normally.
    5. If blank workbooks now open, enable the add-ins individually, restarting Excel after each one, until the problem returns.

If disabling COM add-ins does not help even though Safe Mode works, use the automated Excel check below to test Excel add-ins, startup-folder files, and toolbar settings.

    3. Run the Excel check troubleshooter

On Windows 10 or later, open Microsoft’s Microsoft 365 troubleshooters page and locate Excel check troubleshooter:

    1. Select its Start button.
    2. When prompted that the site is trying to open Get Help, select Open.
    3. Follow the instructions in the Get Help window.^4^

Before running its automated Safe Mode diagnosis, back up the Windows registry and files in Excel startup folders. The troubleshooter can modify registry entries, disable add-ins, move startup files, and rename custom toolbar files.^3^

    4. Escalation

If Online Repair and the Excel check troubleshooter do not resolve the issue, use Contact us on Microsoft’s Excel blank-screen support page. If that option is not displayed, select Read article in browser, then use Contact us at the bottom.^2^

If Microsoft 365 or the computer is managed by your school and Modify, repair, or Get Help is blocked, contact the school’s Microsoft 365 or IT administrator to perform those steps.
