Unable to create VM of any size on free account

Hi,

I signed up for a trial account for 30 days and am trying to get started creating a VM.

I receive the following error message irrespective of what size I try to use:

"This size is currently unavailable in uksouth for this subscription: NotAvailableForSubscription."

In addition, I've tried going through the "Free Services" menu structure and receive the same, e.g.:

Any help would be appreciated.

please navigate in the Azure Portal to https://portal.azure.com/#view/Microsoft_Azure_Policy/PolicyMenuBlade.MenuView/~/Assignments/%23view/Microsoft_Azure_Policy/PolicyMenuBlade/~/Assignments/undefined

please check the following policy:

In the list you can verify which regions are allowed for deployments in your Azure Subscription:

In the "Parameter value" of "allowedLocations" are the available Azure regions listed for your resources.

The Basv2 Series Virtual Machines should be available for the Azure region UK South. But free Azure subscriptions are often limited to specific Azure regions.

Is this why I can't create any virtual machines in any Azure region?

if you don't have an Azure Policy Assignment it doesn't matter. If there is no policy assigned you should be able to create a VM in any Azure Region as far as I know.

The screenshot in your question looks a little different than my "Create a virtual machine" wizard:

In the portal I navigating to "Virtual Machine" -> "Create" -> "Virtual machine" and following the wizard.

Which option to deploy are you using to create the VM?

Going through the same menu structure:

I then get the size error on the next screen:

If I go into "See all sizes" it says all sizes are not available:

This is a new Azure trial account and I think the subscription seems OK:

this is weird. Sorry.

Please select "No infrastructure redundancy required"

And please take a look for v5,v6 or v7 VM SKUs in the list. Also B2ts_v2 SKU or similar b2xxx_v2 SKUs might be an option.

It definitely is weird.

Selecting no infrastructure redundancy required doesn't make a difference unfortunately - there's nothing available at all in UK South. I've tried with different versions of machines as well:

I've done A LOT more playing around with different regions, and discovered that with UK South selected I don't get any options to deploy any virtual machines anywhere:

If I change the region to West Europe though I do get an option to create:

Now I know I can create a VM in West Europe, I thought I'd recreate the virtual network and network security group I had created in UK South. I tried moving them initially but that process wouldn't complete.

When I try to create the virtual network (single subnet), the validation passes:

However, when I click on Create it fails fairly quickly, with apparently no errors but something about policy violation (there are no policies set up on my subscription):

Any ideas? Quickly losing the will here...

I am running out of ideas at the moment.

I noticed a few times during the past years the Azure Portal or underlaying APIs might had a "hic-up" for a short time. Not sure if this is because of maintenance or changes in the background.

The last ideas I have so far:

Give it a try later or tomorrow.

Use an in-private window of your browser and try again.

Just tried again using an InPrivate Edge window with the same results unfortunately.

Bizarrely if I then change the region to UK South, the deployment succeeds:

It seems I can only create certain resource types in certain regions which is completely bizarre.

I guess I do need my network resources to be in the same region as my VMs?

Any idea what else I can try?

Yes, the network object and the VM object needs to be in the same Azure region.

Hi Darran,

I'll give you some more suggestions to add to what Andreas has already provided.

1. If you haven't already, please Register/Re-register Microsoft.Compute resource provider. To do this, please navigate to your subscription in Azure portal, on left menu click Settings -- Resource providers. On right, enter microsoft.compute in the filter box, click on Microsoft.Compute to select it, then click Register/Re-register button.

After starting registration please wait 20 minutes, then check to see if you still get NotAvailableForSubscription error with UK South. Make sure you start Create VM wizard fresh.

2. In regards to the policy error you get when attempting to create Virtual Network in West Europe, please navigate to the resource group -- Activity log, and then drill down into each entry and hunt for more specific error as to why validation failed. Click into each, click on JSON tab, scroll down through, etc.

3. Are you able to create Virtual Network and subnets in other regions? For example, try in West US 3 or West US 2 or North Central US or West Central US, etc. If you only create VNet/subnets there is no charge, and you can delete them right after anyway. Wanting to see if you try some regions that are not as popular if same issue occurs.

@TP Sorry for the delay - life/work took over.

I re-registered the microsoft.compute back on Wednesday and this morning have quickly tried creating a VM in UK South but unfortunately it's the same:

I also then tried in Europe West and that's now showing the same problem!

On UK South when I go into see all sizes, all machines are under "size not available":

For Europe West in see all sizes I can see machines and select one which is then OK:

I've had a look through the JSON for one of the failed attempts on a network group and it's definitely some policy being linked to that's denying access:

Yet if I go into Policies under my subscription I can't see much of anything:
