The Microsoft/OneDrive page is showing your cloud storage, but downloads use your computer's physical C: drive, and the two are separate. Open File Explorer, click This PC, and check the free space under Local Disk (C:); that is the number that matters for downloads. If C: is the drive running out, free space with Settings > System > Storage (turn on Storage Sense and Cleanup recommendations) or move large files and Downloads to an external/secondary drive; buying more OneDrive storage only increases cloud space and will not enlarge your PC's drive.

    Welcome Joyce Whitworth,

Thanks for reaching out to Microsoft Q&A Forum. I understand you need more storage on your Windows 10 computer, but the Microsoft page you visit says you already have enough space to download anything.

To help narrow this down, could you let me know:

    • Which Microsoft page or app shows that you have enough storage, for example your Microsoft account or OneDrive storage page, or the Microsoft Store?
    • What exact message appears when the download fails, and roughly how large is the item you are trying to download?

Please make sure you already tried the Q&A Assist steps. In addition, please try the following:

1, Remove apps you no longer use

    • Open Start, then Settings, then Apps, then Apps & features.
    • Set Sort by to Size so the largest apps appear first.
    • Select any app you no longer need and click Uninstall.

2, Clear the Recycle Bin and review the Downloads folder

    • Right-click Recycle Bin on the desktop and select Empty Recycle Bin.
    • Open File Explorer, go to Downloads, and delete old installers or files you no longer need.

3, Reduce the space used by System Restore

    • Search for Create a restore point from the taskbar and open it.
    • Select Local Disk (C:), then click Configure.
    • Move the Max Usage slider lower, for example to 5%, then click Apply and OK.

4, Turn off hibernation to free several GB on drive C

    • Search for Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator.
    • Type powercfg /h off and press Enter.
    • Note: Fast startup and the Hibernate option will no longer be available. To turn them back on, run powercfg /h on.

    Looking forward to your update.

Microsoft cloud storage and your computer’s physical storage are separate; first check the free space on the Windows drive where the download will be saved.

Check the computer’s actual free space

    1. Press Windows key + E to open File Explorer.
    2. Select This PC.
    3. Under Devices and drives, check the available space on Local Disk (C:) and any other drive receiving the download. This is the space that websites, applications, and Windows use—not the storage amount shown on your Microsoft or OneDrive account.^1^

If the download is larger than the available space on that drive, free space or add physical storage.

Free space safely in Windows 10

    1. Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
    2. Turn on Storage Sense.
    3. Select Cleanup recommendations, review the listed files carefully, and select Clean up.^2^

You can also run Disk Cleanup:

    1. Search for Disk Cleanup from the taskbar.
    2. Select the drive and choose OK.
    3. Select temporary files you no longer need.
    4. Select Clean up system files for additional options, then OK > Delete files.^1^

Review selections before deleting them. Deleting Previous Windows installation(s) removes the ability to return to the previous Windows version.

If OneDrive is occupying the drive

Files with green check marks are stored locally and consume computer storage. To retain them in OneDrive but remove their local copies:

    1. Open your OneDrive folder in File Explorer.
    2. Right-click a large file or folder.
    3. Select Free up space.

A blue cloud icon means the item is online-only and no longer occupies normal local disk space; Internet access is required to open it. Do not choose Delete, because deleting a OneDrive file also deletes it from OneDrive and other synchronized devices.^3^

    Add actual storage

To increase physical capacity, connect a USB drive, SD card, or compatible internal/external drive. Move personal files to it through File Explorer, then set future files to use that drive:

    1. Open Start > Settings > System > Storage.
    2. Under More storage settings, select Change where new content is saved.
    3. Choose the additional drive for each available content type.^1^

Buying additional OneDrive storage increases cloud capacity only; it does not enlarge the computer’s C: drive.
