Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
The installed product is Microsoft 365 Home in an expired grace state—not Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024—so activation requires removing that mismatched installation and reinstalling from the licensing channel through which Professional Plus was legitimately obtained.
Your /dstatus output identifies:
-
Office16O365HomePremR_Grace -
RETAIL(Grace) channel - Error
0xC004F009, meaning that installation’s grace period has expired
Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024 is normally an organizational volume-licensed product activated with KMS or MAK, while a special Professional Plus purchase may also come through Microsoft’s Workplace Discount Program. It is not activated as Microsoft 365 Home. ^1^
1. Identify the purchase channel
Use the matching route:
- Purchased through an employer or organization: Ask its IT/licensing administrator whether the license uses KMS or MAK.
- Purchased through Microsoft’s Workplace Discount Program: Open Word, select I don’t want to sign in or create an account, and manually type the product key without hyphens. ^2^
- Purchased as an ordinary consumer key from an online retailer: Contact the seller and request proof that it is an authorized license. Professional Plus 2024 is generally a volume-license product, not an ordinary retail/home edition. Similar Professional Plus purchases offered as consumer keys have been identified as the wrong licensing channel. ^3^
Do not post the full key publicly.
2. Remove the mismatched Office installation
- Close all Office applications.
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features.
- Uninstall the Microsoft 365/Office installation currently present.
- If multiple Office entries exist, remove installations not covered by the license you intend to use.
- Restart Windows.
Multiple Office installations can create activation conflicts. Removing Office applications does not delete Word documents or Excel workbooks. ^4^
3. Reinstall and activate through the correct channel
If it is a legitimate organizational MAK license
Use the latest Office Deployment Tool and specify ProPlus2024Volume, the PerpetualVL2024 channel, and the MAK in the deployment configuration. Microsoft documents the MAK as part of the configuration used to deploy Office LTSC 2024. ^5^
Example:
<Configuration>
<Add OfficeClientEdition="64" Channel="PerpetualVL2024">
<Product ID="ProPlus2024Volume"
PIDKEY="XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX">
<Language ID="en-us" />
</Product>
</Add>
<RemoveMSI />
<Display Level="Full" AcceptEULA="TRUE" />
</Configuration>
From an elevated Command Prompt in the Office Deployment Tool folder:
setup.exe /configure configuration.xml
ProPlus2024Volume is the documented product ID for Office LTSC Professional Plus 2024. ^6^
If the organization uses KMS
Install the organization-provided Office LTSC build and connect the PC to its corporate network or VPN. A correctly configured KMS client discovers the organization’s KMS host through DNS and activates automatically, subject to the KMS activation threshold. ^7^
If it is a consumer Office 2024 purchase
Redeem it at the official Office setup page using the Microsoft account associated with the purchase, then install it from that account. If already redeemed, reinstall from Services & subscriptions rather than entering the key again. ^2^
If the seller cannot provide a valid consumer entitlement, organizational MAK/KMS access, or Workplace Discount Program key, request a refund. Generic activation repair steps will not convert the installed Microsoft 365 Home license into Professional Plus 2024.
