Why does copilot waste image credits and return nothing?

Frequently when using copilot for image generation, it will either stall out and just not respond, or claim that it has generated an image when it hasn't. I went back yesterday to check the credits, and it turns out that some of these failures are consuming image credits. Why does this happen, how do I (or how will microsoft) stop it from happening again, and how can I get a refund of my wasted credits?

    Hi PC,

I can understand why this is frustrating, especially when an image request appears to complete but produces nothing while your available usage is still reduced.

AI usage is tracked automatically, but Microsoft’s public documentation does not explain in detail how every failed or partially completed image request is counted. Limits may also vary depending on the feature, where Copilot is being used, and current system conditions. You can review the general information here: How AI usage works across Microsoft 365 subscriptions.

Before trying the same prompt again, I would suggest checking whether the image appears in your recent Copilot content or OneDrive, then starting a new conversation and submitting the request once rather than repeatedly retrying it in the stalled chat. If Copilot frequently hangs or disconnects, you can also run the Copilot connectivity troubleshooter.

Because this is a user-to-user community, I cannot access your account usage records or restore any consumed credits here. Please contact Microsoft Support, sign in with the affected account, and provide the approximate dates and times, screenshots, the Copilot platform you used, and any changes shown in your usage balance. Support can review the account-specific records and confirm whether any adjustment is available, although restoration is not guaranteed. Thank you so much for your understanding.

A failed or invisible Copilot image can still consume usage because Microsoft tracks the image-generation action automatically; document each occurrence and ask Microsoft Support to review the affected credit transactions, because no self-service credit-restoration method is documented.

Why credits can be consumed without a visible image

Microsoft distinguishes AI credits from feature limits and automatically tracks applicable AI actions across Copilot and Windows/Microsoft 365 apps. Limits can also vary by feature, entry point, subscription, and system conditions.^1^

Consequently, the request may be counted when processing begins even if the result later stalls or fails to render in the client. That symptom alone does not establish whether generation failed on the service or whether the generated content failed to synchronize or display.

If using the updated Copilot app, generated files are stored in OneDrive, and Microsoft acknowledges that temporary functionality gaps can occur during app rollouts.^2^

Recover the image and prevent repeated charges

    1. Check OneDrive before regenerating.
Open OneDrive using the same account as Copilot and look for recently generated Copilot content. If the generation completed but chat failed to display it, the file may still be present there.^2^
    2. Start a new conversation rather than repeatedly submitting in the stalled thread.
For image edits, select + → Add images or files, wait until the correct attachment appears, and then submit the editing instruction. Microsoft documents this attachment workflow for Copilot image editing.^3^
    3. Report each failure from the affected conversation.
In Copilot, select … → Send feedback → Report a problem. Include:
      • Date and approximate time, including time zone
      • Prompt that was submitted
      • Message claiming that generation completed
      • Screenshot showing the missing result
      • Credit balance before and after, if available
      • Windows version and whether this occurred in the app, website, Edge, or Paint
These details are specifically requested by Microsoft to investigate Copilot problems.^2^
    4. If Copilot commonly stalls or disconnects, run the connectivity diagnostic.
Open Windows Get Help, search for Copilot connectivity troubleshooter, and follow its steps. It checks firewall rules and other connection blockers that can interrupt responses.^4^
    5. Review the recorded balance.
Sign in to the affected Microsoft account, open Services & subscriptions, and inspect the AI-credit or usage status. AI benefits belong to the subscription owner and are not shared with other members of a Microsoft 365 Family subscription.^1^

    Request restoration of wasted credits

Use the affected personal Microsoft account and open Microsoft Support:

    1. Enter Copilot image generation consumed credits but returned no image.
    2. Select Get Help.
    3. Scroll down and select Sign in to contact support or Contact Support.
    4. Ask the agent to review the timestamped AI-credit transactions and determine whether credits consumed by the failed generations can be restored or adjusted.
    5. Attach the screenshots and timestamps collected above.

This is the executable support path provided for account and credit-status issues.^5^ Microsoft’s published documentation does not provide a self-service credit reversal process or guarantee that Support will restore credits; Support must investigate and advise which remedy is available.

    Refund versus credit restoration

Credit restoration is different from refunding the Microsoft 365 or Copilot subscription. If seeking a subscription refund, go to Microsoft account → Services & subscriptions → subscription → Manage → Cancel. Eligibility is determined during cancellation and depends on purchase timing, subscription type, and country or region.[^6^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Microsoft subscription refund policy | Microsoft Support")

Do not cancel solely to recover several image credits unless cancellation is actually intended; the published refund route applies to the subscription purchase, not specifically to individual failed generations.
