Set the built-in Speakers device as the default playback device after unplugging the earphones, then test it from the Windows Sound control panel.

    1. Select and test the built-in speakers

    1. Unplug the earphones.
    2. Open Control Panel → Hardware and Sound → Sound.
    3. On the Playback tab:
      • Right-click an empty area and enable Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices.
      • Select Speakers or Speakers / Headphones.
      • If it is disabled, select Enable.
      • Select Set Default, followed by Properties.
    4. On the Levels tab, unmute the device and raise its volume.
    5. Return to the Playback tab, select Speakers → Configure → Test.

Windows allows the playback device to be selected and made the default output device.^1^

Also watch the green level meter beside Speakers while playing audio:

    • The meter moves but there is no sound: Windows is sending audio to that endpoint; continue with the driver and hardware checks below.
    • Speakers are missing or the meter does not move: continue with the driver refresh.

    2. Refresh the audio driver

    1. Press Windows key + X → Device Manager.
    2. Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
    3. Right-click the installed audio device—commonly Realtek, Conexant, IDT, or High Definition Audio—and select Uninstall.
    4. Restart the computer so Windows reloads the device.
    5. Test the speakers again with the earphones disconnected.

If Windows does not restore the correct driver, download the Windows 8 audio driver for the computer’s exact manufacturer and model from the manufacturer’s support site, install it, and restart. Driver reinstallation is also the recommended next step when jack detection stops working correctly.^2^

    3. Separate a jack-detection fault from failed speakers

    After reinstalling the correct driver:

    1. Insert and remove the earphone plug several times gently.
    2. Check whether Speakers reappears or becomes active in the Playback tab.
    3. Restart once with the earphones disconnected and test again.

If the speakers work only after restarting, or Windows continues treating earphones as connected after they are removed, the headphone socket’s detection switch or its driver is likely involved.

If Speakers is enabled, selected as default, and its green meter moves but neither speaker produces sound, the remaining likely causes are the internal speakers, their cable, or the headphone-jack switching circuit. A computer repair technician should then inspect the speaker connection and audio jack. Because both internal speakers are silent while earphones work, replacing Windows or changing .NET settings is not indicated.

Windows 8 is no longer a current supported Windows release. Avoid third-party “driver updater” utilities; obtain drivers only from the PC manufacturer.
