Microsoft Teams insists on signing me into an org I am no longer part of, signs me in as a guest

This question has been asked before, but none of the answers provided have worked for me.

My wife and I share our Microsoft365 account. A few years she worked for an org that used Teams for meetings, so they gave her credentials to sign into their org, which she did until she quit. So, those credentials are no longer valid.

When I sign into Teams using the app on my laptop, it shows that old org's name up top and shows me as a guest. I did the procedures of removing the credentials using Credential Manager, deleting Teams' cache, and resetting Teams. No change.

If I sign in via my browser, after entering my credentials, a window appears allowing me to choose between my personal account and that old org's account. If I choose my personal account, Teams logs me on with my profile. Great. But the app does not do that on my computer.

When I sign in using the app, the old org's name appears up top followed by a red triangle. When I click on my guest profile, the drop down shows the name of that org, also with a warning triangle. Once in the past I did click on that org's name to see if I could sign out, but since the credentials were no longer valid, that did not work.

If I sign into Teams on my phone, it also shows me the page allowing me to choose between my personal account and that org's account.

All I want is to remove that old organization's account from my computer, and signing into the Teams app as the account owner, not a guest, since I might be joining a new organization and take calls from them. Please help.

Leave the old organization from Teams personal → Settings → Accounts and orgs → Leave; clearing credentials or resetting Teams cannot remove the guest membership attached to the Microsoft identity.

    1. Leave the old guest organization

Because the organization also appears when signing in through a browser and on the phone, remove the organization membership rather than repeating local cache repairs:

    1. Sign in to Teams with the personal Microsoft account.
    2. Open Settings → Accounts and orgs.
    3. Find the old organization and select Leave.
    4. Teams opens the Organizations page in a browser. Find the old organization again, select Leave, and confirm. ^1^
    5. Allow a few hours for the change to propagate.
    6. Sign out of the Teams desktop app, close it completely, reopen it, and sign in with the personal account.

Caution: Leaving deletes the guest relationship and associated data, and it cannot be undone without a new invitation from that organization. ^2^

    2. If Leave is unavailable or fails

The old organization may prohibit self-service departure, or the guest account may be disabled. In that case, its administrator or privacy contact must delete the guest account from that organization. Microsoft documents both conditions as reasons a guest cannot leave independently. ^3^

Ask the former organization’s IT administrator to:

    • Remove the guest user from its Microsoft Entra organization—not merely from a particular Team.
    • Confirm that the guest account has been deleted.

This is distinct from removing someone from an individual Team; only an administrator can remove someone from the organization. ^4^

    3. Remove any remaining Windows account binding

Do this only if the former organization appears in Windows:

    1. Open Start → Settings → Accounts → Access work or school.
    2. Expand the former organization’s account.
    3. Select Disconnect, then Yes.
    4. Restart Windows and sign in to Teams with the personal account.

Disconnecting removes that organization’s sign-in information and data from the computer; it does not delete the online account. ^5^

Also check Settings → Accounts → Email & accounts. If the obsolete account is listed as an account used by apps, select it and remove it. Do not remove the personal Microsoft account used to sign in to Windows or Microsoft 365.

Since Credential Manager cleanup, Teams cache deletion, and app reset have already made no difference, those steps do not need to be repeated. Until the membership change finishes propagating, Teams on the web can continue to be used by selecting the personal account.

Since you can do this on the web, please click on the three dots on the upper right, then go to Settings > Accounts & Org, do you see the option to leave the org?
