Additional sign-in or account-related issues within Microsoft Teams Free
Leave the old organization from Teams personal → Settings → Accounts and orgs → Leave; clearing credentials or resetting Teams cannot remove the guest membership attached to the Microsoft identity.
1. Leave the old guest organization
Because the organization also appears when signing in through a browser and on the phone, remove the organization membership rather than repeating local cache repairs:
- Sign in to Teams with the personal Microsoft account.
- Open Settings → Accounts and orgs.
- Find the old organization and select Leave.
- Teams opens the Organizations page in a browser. Find the old organization again, select Leave, and confirm. ^1^
- Allow a few hours for the change to propagate.
- Sign out of the Teams desktop app, close it completely, reopen it, and sign in with the personal account.
Caution: Leaving deletes the guest relationship and associated data, and it cannot be undone without a new invitation from that organization. ^2^
2. If Leave is unavailable or fails
The old organization may prohibit self-service departure, or the guest account may be disabled. In that case, its administrator or privacy contact must delete the guest account from that organization. Microsoft documents both conditions as reasons a guest cannot leave independently. ^3^
Ask the former organization’s IT administrator to:
- Remove the guest user from its Microsoft Entra organization—not merely from a particular Team.
- Confirm that the guest account has been deleted.
This is distinct from removing someone from an individual Team; only an administrator can remove someone from the organization. ^4^
3. Remove any remaining Windows account binding
Do this only if the former organization appears in Windows:
- Open Start → Settings → Accounts → Access work or school.
- Expand the former organization’s account.
- Select Disconnect, then Yes.
- Restart Windows and sign in to Teams with the personal account.
Disconnecting removes that organization’s sign-in information and data from the computer; it does not delete the online account. ^5^
Also check Settings → Accounts → Email & accounts. If the obsolete account is listed as an account used by apps, select it and remove it. Do not remove the personal Microsoft account used to sign in to Windows or Microsoft 365.
Since Credential Manager cleanup, Teams cache deletion, and app reset have already made no difference, those steps do not need to be repeated. Until the membership change finishes propagating, Teams on the web can continue to be used by selecting the personal account.
