iOS PowerPoint Update Broke Native AirPlay Full-Screen Presentation on Apple TV

A recent update completely broke full-screen presentations over AirPlay. The old icon showing a screen with a play button is missing, and the app now fails to trigger full-screen mode on Apple TV.

Instead of a clean, widescreen slideshow, it just mirrors my iPhone 16 Pro Max editing screen. The TV shows all my settings, sidebars, and navigation arrows, squishing the actual slides inside massive black borders.

I am on a managed corporate device, meaning I cannot use third-party apps or workarounds. I have tried completely reinstalling the app, resetting my phone's network permissions, restarting the Apple TV, and launching the app in landscape mode. Nothing works. The app is completely failing to recognize the Apple TV as a presentation display. Please restore the manual external screen presentation button or fix this automatic AirPlay handshake bug.

    Hello all,

The best workaround left on a locked down corporate device is to run the presentation through PowerPoint for the Web inside Safari or Microsoft Edge.

To answer how these bugs actually get fixed and addressed for everyone else jumping into the thread, since this is a peer to peer community forum, Microsoft engineers do not actively monitor threads here for bug reports and there is no way on iOS to roll back an App Store update unless your corporate IT department specifically deploys an older cached enterprise package through Microsoft Intune.

When a widespread regression like 2.115.2 happens, the mobile engineering team tracks the spike through the in app diagnostic telemetry, which is why using the Send Feedback button inside PowerPoint settings is the best way to get it on their radar so they can push a 2.115.3 hotfix to the App Store.

In the meantime, to get your slides full screen on the Apple TV or HDMI projector, open Safari or Edge on your iPhone or iPad, go to office.com, and sign in to your corporate account to open the presentation in your browser. Once the file loads in the browser, tap the three dots or share menu in the browser bar to request the Desktop Website so it gives you the full web ribbon instead of the mobile preview. Connect your device to the Apple TV via AirPlay or plug in your HDMI adapter, rotate your phone or iPad physically into landscape orientation, and tap Slide Show then Play from Beginning inside the browser window. Tap the full screen expansion arrows inside the web player and the browser will push a clean, edge to edge widescreen slide feed to the TV without any of the app editing sidebars.

Let me know if running the deck in desktop mode through your browser gets it filling the Apple TV screen properly while we wait for Microsoft to push the next patch.

A bit technical, but with a MacBook and ipatool I was able to download and reinstall / sideload the prior version of the software last night. I’ll have to test subsequent releases using my iPhone before updating my iPad again. AI can explain the steps (or perform them for you).

    Hello,

First off, I have to clarify that this public forum is staffed by users just like you, not Microsoft employees, so we do not have any backdoor ability to fix the app or push out code to restore old buttons.

What you are experiencing looks like the system wide AirPlay presentation breakage that Apple shipped in the recent iOS 27 update. Apple fundamentally changed how the operating system handles the second screen extension APIs over AirPlay, which killed the dedicated presenter views for software like PowerPoint and causes your display to instantly fall back into a standard device mirror.

Since you are on a corporate device, my ability to find a workaround might be a bit limited if your IT locks things down heavily.

Just to give us a starting point for diagnosis, what exact iOS 27 subversion is currently on that phone and what version build of PowerPoint is installed right now? Also, does your corporate management block you from running local betas via TestFlight if we need to see if a newer test build patched this broken handshake logic?

    Please let me know.

AirPlay presentation remains documented for PowerPoint on iOS, but there is no published Microsoft fix or confirmed notice that the recent iPhone update intentionally removed the external-screen presentation control; report this as an iOS regression and have your Microsoft 365 administrator open a support case.

Confirm the supported presentation path once

While connected to the Apple TV through AirPlay:

    1. Open the presentation in PowerPoint.
    2. Tap Edit at the top.
    3. Tap the ellipsis (…) at the lower right.
    4. On the mini toolbar, select Home → Slide Show.
    5. Select From Start or From Current.

That is Microsoft’s currently documented iPhone workflow, and Microsoft still lists AirPlay as a supported wireless connection method.^1^

If this starts full-screen mode on the phone but the Apple TV continues showing the editing interface, the failure is specifically in PowerPoint’s external-display handling—not simply an inability to discover or mirror the Apple TV. Reinstalling, resetting network permissions, restarting Apple TV, and changing orientation have already ruled out the usual local recovery steps, so repeating them is unlikely to add useful information.

Microsoft also documents AirPlay projection for PowerPoint on iPad, indicating that wireless projection remains an intended capability rather than a generally announced removal.^2^ However, PowerPoint for iOS does not support Presenter View as a separate feature; that limitation should not be confused with failure to send a clean slide show to an external display.^3^

Submit a diagnostic report from PowerPoint

    In PowerPoint for iOS:

    1. Tap the profile picture in the upper-left corner.
    2. Select Help & Feedback.
    3. Submit the issue as a problem report.
    4. Include:
      • PowerPoint version/build.
      • iOS version and iPhone 16 Pro Max model.
      • Apple TV model and tvOS version.
      • Whether ordinary iOS screen mirroring works.
      • The exact result of Home → Slide Show → From Start.
      • A photo or screenshot showing the editing UI on the television.
      • The last PowerPoint version in which the external-presentation icon worked, if known.
      • A request to restore the manual external-screen control or investigate external-display routing.

Microsoft recommends including screenshots and allowing follow-up contact where organizational policy permits.^4^

    Escalate through the corporate administrator

Because this is a managed device, ask the Microsoft 365 administrator to open a support request:

    1. Open the Microsoft 365 admin center.
    2. Select Help & support.
    3. Describe the issue and search the suggested results.
    4. If unresolved, select Contact Support and choose phone or email.
    5. Supply the same version details and screenshots, plus the approximate date when the behavior changed.

Only an administrator can use these business-subscription support methods. If the subscription was purchased through a partner, the administrator must contact that partner instead.^5^

Ask support to determine whether the affected build is a known regression, whether a fixed build is being deployed, and whether the organization can use a prior approved PowerPoint build until remediation. No rollback should be attempted outside corporate mobile-device-management policy.
