Start with Excel Power Query and Power Pivot, then follow the Power BI Data Analyst learning paths toward PL-300 certification; consider Microsoft Fabric only after gaining solid Power BI, data-modeling, and DAX experience.
Recommended sequence
- Strengthen Excel analytics Begin with Power Query, Power Pivot, PivotTables, and the Excel Data Model:
- Power Query: connect to, clean, combine, and transform accounting data.
- Power Pivot: relate multiple tables and build analytical models.
- DAX: create measures for variance, margins, growth, rolling totals, and other financial KPIs.
- Actual versus budget analysis
- Profit-and-loss trends
- Cash-flow reporting
- Department or cost-centre performance
- Automated monthly data refresh
- Take the introductory Power BI path Complete Get started with Microsoft data analytics. It has no prerequisites and introduces the data-analyst role, Power BI reports, Microsoft Fabric, and Copilot in Power BI.^3^
- Build practical Power BI reporting skills Continue with Prepare and visualize data with Microsoft Power BI. This beginner path covers:
- Connecting to Excel, databases, and other sources
- Cleaning and transforming data with Power Query
- Configuring semantic models
- Designing interactive Power BI reports
- Using Copilot and understanding Fabric
- Executive financial dashboards
- Budget-versus-actual reports
- Revenue and profitability analysis
- Working-capital and cash-flow dashboards
- Drill-through reports by entity, region, product, or account
- Prepare for PL-300 After completing the practical paths, use PL-300: Microsoft Power BI Data Analyst as the main certification target. Its assessed areas are:
- Preparing data: 25–30%
- Modeling data: 25–30%
- Visualizing and analyzing data: 25–30%
- Managing and securing Power BI: 15–20%
Optional advanced progression
After PL-300 and practical Power BI experience, consider DP-600 Microsoft Fabric Analytics Engineer if the career goal expands into enterprise-scale analytics, semantic models, data warehouses, lakehouses, governance, or analytics solution architecture.
DP-600 is advanced and expects previous data-modeling and analytics experience. Prior SQL or DAX experience is required, and Power BI semantic-model and reporting experience is recommended.^7^
Best career-focused choice
For an FCA, the highest-value immediate combination is:
FCA domain expertise → Excel Power Query/Power Pivot → Power BI reporting and DAX → PL-300 certification → optional DP-600/Fabric
This positions you for financial analyst, FP&A, management reporting, finance business partnering, business intelligence, and finance-transformation work. BizTalk Server training would be relevant mainly if the intended role involves enterprise application integration; it is not the primary path for financial analysis.
