Problem description

I recently moved an Azure Application Insights resource and its associated Log Analytics workspace from one Azure subscription to another within the same tenant.

After the move, the Application Insights Overview page displays the following warning:

The workspace assignment for this Application Insights resource needs to be repaired. To update the assigned workspace, click here.

When I click the repair option, select the existing Log Analytics workspace, and click Apply, the workspace association does not appear to be repaired. The warning persists.

I also attempted to update the workspace association using Azure CLI in PowerShell. The command completed successfully, and the workspace resource ID is assigned. However, the Application Insights ingestion mode continues to show Disabled.

Resource details

For privacy, the exact resource names, resource groups, subscription IDs, and resource IDs have been omitted.

Application Insights: Existing production Application Insights resource

Log Analytics: Its associated workspace

Azure region: East US

Subscription: Resources were moved from one subscription to another

Steps already attempted

Moved the Application Insights resource and Log Analytics workspace to the destination subscription.

Opened Application Insights in the Azure Portal.

Clicked the workspace repair warning.

Selected the existing Log Analytics workspace and clicked Apply.

Attempted to update the workspace association using Azure CLI:

az monitor app-insights component update --resource-group "<APPLICATION_INSIGHTS_RESOURCE_GROUP>" --app "<APPLICATION_INSIGHTS_RESOURCE_NAME>" --workspace "<LOG_ANALYTICS_WORKSPACE_RESOURCE_ID>" -o json

The command completed successfully.

Current configuration

I verified the resource configuration using:

az resource show --resource-group "<APPLICATION_INSIGHTS_RESOURCE_GROUP>" --name "<APPLICATION_INSIGHTS_RESOURCE_NAME>" --resource-type "Microsoft.Insights/components" --query "{Name:name, IngestionMode:properties.IngestionMode, ProvisioningState:properties.provisioningState, Workspace:properties.WorkspaceResourceId}" -o json

The relevant output is:

{
  "IngestionMode": "Disabled",
  "ProvisioningState": "Succeeded"
}

The workspace resource ID is present in the resource configuration, but I have omitted it here to avoid exposing client-specific resource details.

Impact

Application Insights is not showing the expected telemetry. For example, the following query in the Application Insights Logs experience returns zero requests for the last 30 days:

requests
| where timestamp > ago(30d)
| summarize TotalRequests=count(), LatestRequest=max(timestamp)

Questions

  1. Why does the Application Insights resource continue to report IngestionMode: Disabled even though its workspace association is configured?

Is there a supported way to re-enable ingestion after moving Application Insights and Log Analytics resources between subscriptions?

Could this be caused by stale configuration or an internal migration state?

Is there a safe Azure CLI, PowerShell, or ARM API procedure to repair the ingestion mode without recreating the Application Insights resource?

Has anyone experienced this issue after moving Application Insights and Log Analytics resources between subscriptions? If so, how was it resolved?

I would appreciate any guidance or a documented recovery procedure. I would prefer to retain the existing Application Insights resource and its configuration rather than recreate it.Category: Azure Monitor

    Likely cause/summary: after cross-subscription move, the component can keep a stale workspace linkage state if permissions/association metadata are not fully reconciled. Your output (ProvisioningState=Succeeded but IngestionMode=Disabled + repair warning persists) matches this pattern.

    1. Verify required permission on the target Log Analytics workspace.
    2. Confirm the workspace link at resource level (not only portal blade).
      • Re-check properties.WorkspaceResourceId on the component.
      • Re-run update with the full workspace resource ID and then re-read the component JSON after a few minutes.
    3. Force a clean control-plane refresh sequence.
      • Save any workbook/alert dependencies first.
      • Remove and reapply workspace association using ARM/CLI flow (same workspace) to force metadata reconciliation.
      • Avoid concurrent updates during this step.
    4. Validate telemetry path end-to-end.
      • Send a fresh test telemetry item from the app.
      • Confirm arrival in the target Log Analytics workspace tables.
      • If data lands but portal still shows Disabled, it is likely portal/control-plane state drift.
    5. If warning remains, open a support case with move evidence.
      • Include: component resource ID, workspace resource ID, move timestamps, CLI command outputs, and correlation IDs.
      • Cross-subscription move cases sometimes require backend repair of linkage metadata.

    Additional reference on move constraints/support matrix:

    Confirmed facts from your post:

    • Resource move completed.
    • WorkspaceResourceId is present.
    • Repair action and CLI update both completed, but warning and Disabled ingestion mode persist.

    Possible causes (not yet confirmed):

    • missing effective permission during repair operation,
    • stale linkage metadata after move,
    • control-plane/portal sync lag or drift.

    Validation checks after remediation:

    • repair banner disappears,
    • ingestion mode reflects expected active state,
    • new telemetry appears in the linked workspace.
