Press the Caps Lock key once—your symptoms mean Caps Lock is currently turned on, so pressing it again should restore lowercase typing and make Shift + letter produce capitals. Caps Lock is a toggle key, and many keyboards show its state with an indicator light.^1^
If the Caps Lock key does not respond
- Press Windows key + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard.
- Click Caps on the on-screen keyboard.
- Test typing again.
- Press Windows key + Ctrl + O again to close it.^2^
If the on-screen Caps button fixes the problem but the physical Caps Lock key does not, the physical key may be stuck or faulty. Restart the computer, then test the key again. For an external keyboard, disconnect and reconnect it or try another USB port.
