An Azure platform as a service offer that is used to deploy web and cloud applications.
Submit the dedicated Azure for Students support form at https://aka.ms/azureforstudentssupport because it does not require an active Azure subscription and routes failed activations for account-level review.^1^
What to submit
Include:
- The Microsoft account used during activation.
- Your university email address.
- The exact message: “We encountered an unexpected error. Try again later.”
- The approximate date/time and country/region of the latest attempt.
- A screenshot of the final error with personal identifiers and session/correlation IDs redacted from any public post.
- A screenshot showing the GitHub Student Developer Pack approval.
- A statement that:
- no Azure subscription was created;
- the university email is verified;
- different browsers and repeated attempts produced the same result;
- the support portal returned
AADSTS50020.
- Ask specifically for an Azure for Students eligibility and activation review.
Keep a current student ID or enrollment letter available. Support may request evidence during a manual review, but manual approval or provisioning is not guaranteed; eligibility still must satisfy Microsoft’s requirements. Azure for Students requires a full-time student at an accredited, degree-granting institution, academic-status verification through the institution’s email, and is limited to one subscription per eligible customer.^2^
GitHub Education approval does not itself establish Azure eligibility because the GitHub and Microsoft verification systems are separate.^3^
If the student support form cannot be submitted
Use Microsoft’s general support page and select Get help, describe the issue as Azure for Students activation / subscription management, and then select Contact Support if offered.^4^
Azure also supports creating Billing and Subscription Management tickets without a subscription through Azure CLI. The command requires a valid problem-classification ID plus contact details, so retrieve the current service and classification values rather than inventing them.^5^ This is a fallback if the web form fails and Azure CLI authentication succeeds.
About AADSTS50020
AADSTS50020 means the signed-in identity does not exist in, or cannot access, the tenant targeted by that application. It commonly occurs when a personal Microsoft account and an organizational university account are being used in different identity contexts.^6^
Record these fields from the full error page for the private support case:
- User account
- Identity provider
- Tenant/resource tenant
- Application name or ID
- Timestamp
- Correlation ID
Do not post those values publicly. Since different browsers have already been tested, repeating browser or cache troubleshooting is unlikely to add useful information. The error should instead be included in the support request so Microsoft can determine whether the support portal selected the wrong account/tenant or the activation record requires backend review.
A Microsoft Q&A moderator cannot inspect private account records or provision the subscription from a public thread. Account-specific investigation and any manual verification must be handled through the support case.
