Quick access toolbar turns completely white in Word, Excel and PowerPoint in full screen

The upper bar of my Microsoft Word suddenly started turning completely white. It's a problem that also occurs on my Powerpoint and Excel. Moreover, it's only white when in full screen, whereas it turns back blue when its in non-full-window-view mode.

If it can be useful, I'm on MacOS Sonoma version 14.2.1, version 16.114.3 of word.

If someone were able to offer their help I would be extremely grateful.

First pic in full screen, second in small screen.

Update Sonoma. Version 14.8.9 is the current release. That very well could account for display issues.

Use Dark Mode or keep the apps in windowed mode as a temporary workaround, then install the next Office update that becomes available because version 16.114.3 does not document a fix for this full-screen rendering defect.

The screenshots match a recently reported Office for Mac issue: in full-screen Light Mode, the title/Quick Access controls remain functional but render white against a white background. A closely matching report states that the controls become visible when hovered and that Dark Mode is unaffected ^1^.

    Temporary workaround

    Choose either option:

    1. Use Dark Mode
      • Open Apple menu → System Settings → Appearance.
      • Select Dark.
      • Close and reopen Word, Excel, and PowerPoint if their appearance does not change immediately.
Microsoft 365 for Mac follows the macOS Light or Dark appearance ^2^.
    2. Stay in Light Mode but leave full screen
      • Move the pointer to the top-left corner.
      • Select the green window button to exit full screen.
      • Maximize the window manually without entering macOS full-screen mode.

The second option preserves the blue title bar shown in your windowed screenshot.

    Check for the patched build

Version 16.114.3 lists general quality improvements for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, but its specifically documented Office fix concerns Office 2021 activation—not the white full-screen toolbar ^3^.

Check periodically for a build newer than 16.114.3:

    • If Office came from Microsoft:
      1. Open Word.
      2. Select Help → Check for Updates.
      3. Enable Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date.
      4. Install all available Word, Excel, and PowerPoint updates.
    • If Office came from the Mac App Store:
      1. Open App Store → Updates.
      2. Select Update All, or update each Microsoft app individually.

These are Microsoft’s supported Office for Mac update methods ^4^.

    Report the affected build

Until an update explicitly corrects the rendering:

    1. In Word, select Help → Feedback.
    2. Report that the title/Quick Access area becomes white only in full-screen Light Mode.
    3. Include both screenshots, macOS Sonoma 14.2.1, and Word/Office 16.114.3.
    4. Repeat from Excel or PowerPoint only if their behavior differs.

Microsoft recommends including screenshots with Mac feedback so the report is actionable ^5^.

Reinstalling Office or resetting the Ribbon is unlikely to be useful at this stage because the same state-dependent rendering appears across three Office applications rather than in one app’s customized toolbar.
