A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
If Office Home & Business on the Mac suddenly stopped allowing edits, the most likely causes in this scenario are:
- macOS is too old to receive the Office licensing/update changes.
- The Office license needs to be refreshed.
- The installed Office build no longer matches the perpetual license.
Try these steps in order:
- Check macOS version.
- Go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Software Update.
- Microsoft requires macOS 12 (Monterey) or later to update Microsoft 365 or Office apps on Mac.
- If the Mac cannot be updated to macOS 12 or later, required Office updates cannot be installed. In that case, use Microsoft 365 on the web as a temporary workaround.
- Update Office.
- Open Excel or another Office app.
- Select Help > Check for Updates.
- If Microsoft AutoUpdate opens, select Update or Update All.
- Restart the app after the update finishes.
- Refresh the license.
- Open Word or Excel.
- Go to About the app > More Info > Refresh License.
- Sign in with the account associated with the Office Home & Business purchase if prompted.
- If editing is still blocked, reinstall Office from the Microsoft account subscriptions page.
- Uninstall Office.
- Reinstall the copy tied to the original purchase.
- After reinstalling, open an Office app and sign in to reactivate it.
- If the issue started after a recent Office update, check the installed app version.
- In Finder > Applications, right-click Microsoft Excel.app > Get Info.
- For older perpetual Mac licenses, the installed software version must match the license generation. A mismatched newer build can prevent activation.
Important:
- If this is Office 2019 for Mac, support ended on October 10, 2023. The apps can still work, but no longer receive security updates or bug fixes.
- If this is Office 2021 for Mac and the Mac is on an unsupported macOS version, Office can stop updating correctly and may enter reduced functionality until macOS is updated.
