If the email is open in Microsoft Edge, press F11 once to exit full-screen mode and restore the browser controls and Windows taskbar.^1^
This is different from Ctrl+Alt+Delete, which merely interrupts the current display and does not turn off full-screen mode.
If F11 does not restore the usual display
- Press Alt+Tab and select another open application.
- If other applications display the taskbar normally, the email application itself is in a full-screen or expanded reading mode.
- Identify the email application—such as Outlook, Mail, Edge, Chrome, or another program—before changing Windows settings. Full-screen controls differ between applications, so F11 should not be assumed to work in every desktop email client.
If this is Outlook on an Android or iOS device rather than a Windows computer, its reading pane uses a diagonal-arrows expand control at the upper right.^2^
If the taskbar is missing in every application
Check whether Windows is configured to hide it automatically:
- Windows 11: Move the pointer to the bottom edge of the screen. If the taskbar appears, right-click it and select Taskbar settings → expand Taskbar behaviors → clear Automatically hide the taskbar.
- Windows 10: Right-click the taskbar → Taskbar settings → turn off Automatically hide the taskbar in desktop mode. If the computer is a tablet or 2-in-1, also turn off Automatically hide the taskbar in tablet mode.
Microsoft documents these separate Windows 10 and Windows 11 taskbar settings and notes that a hidden taskbar should appear when the pointer reaches the bottom edge.^3^
If F11 does nothing and the taskbar is absent only while viewing email, the exact next step requires the name of the email application and whether the computer runs Windows 10 or Windows 11.
