Using classic Outlook for Windows in business environments
Ask your Microsoft 365 or Exchange administrator to assign an owner to the group, because Outlook cannot save group changes when your account is outside the group’s permitted management scope.
If the group is managed in Microsoft 365
An administrator should:
- Open the Exchange admin center.
- Go to Recipients → Groups.
- Select the affected distribution list or mail-enabled security group.
- Under Members, review Owners and add you—or another appropriate user—as an owner.
- Save the change, then retry editing the group.
The Exchange admin center supports viewing and managing both owners and members from the group’s details pane.^1^
If the administrator cannot assign the owner through the admin center, an Exchange Online admin, Exchange admin, or member of the Security Group Creation and Membership role can use Exchange Online PowerShell. Microsoft documents -BypassSecurityGroupManagerCheck for repairing ownership when the administrator is not already listed as a manager.^2^

After ownership is assigned, the new owner should close and reopen Outlook before trying the modification again.
If the group is synchronized from on-premises
If the group was created in local Active Directory or Exchange and synchronized to Microsoft 365, it must be modified with the on-premises Exchange Admin Center or Exchange Management Shell, not Outlook or the cloud Exchange admin center. The resulting ownership and membership changes then synchronize to Microsoft 365.^3^
Your Exchange administrator can determine whether the group is directory-synchronized. If it is, ask the team that manages your organization’s local Active Directory or Exchange Server to:
- Open the group in the on-premises Exchange management tools.
- Assign an appropriate owner or manager.
- Make the required membership changes there.
- Allow directory synchronization to publish the changes to Microsoft 365.
Who to contact
Contact your organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator, Exchange administrator, or IT help desk and provide:
- The group’s display name and email address.
- The exact error: “email-group isn't within your current write scope. Can't perform save operation.”
- A note that Outlook shows no owner.
- The member or setting that needs to be changed.
This is a server-side ownership, directory-authority, or administrative-scope issue; reinstalling Outlook or creating an Outlook profile will not assign the required group-management rights.
