Run an Online Repair of Microsoft 365 from Windows Settings; the Repair Now action in the error dialog has already failed, while Online Repair performs the more thorough suite-wide repair.
Run the full repair
Close all Office applications, then:
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three dots beside it, then Modify.
- Select Online Repair → Repair.
- Complete the prompts and restart Windows if requested.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office, then Modify.
- Select Online Repair → Repair.
- Complete the prompts and restart Windows if requested.
Online Repair repairs the entire Office suite, even when only PowerPoint is failing. If the installer instead displays Change your installation, the installation is MSI-based; select Repair → Continue. ^1^
Afterward, start PowerPoint directly and then open a presentation. The expected result is that PowerPoint launches without the error and the slides open normally.
If PowerPoint still will not open
Test whether a PowerPoint add-in is preventing startup:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
powerpnt.exe /safe
- Select OK.
- If PowerPoint opens in Safe Mode, go to File → Options → Add-ins.
- Beside Manage, select COM Add-ins → Go.
- Clear every add-in checkbox, select OK, and restart PowerPoint normally.
- If it now works, re-enable add-ins one at a time, restarting PowerPoint after each one, until the problem returns. Leave the conflicting add-in disabled. ^2^
If PowerPoint cannot start even in Safe Mode after Online Repair, this is no longer isolated by the available procedures. On an education-managed computer, contact the school’s IT administrator to repair or redeploy the Microsoft 365 installation; otherwise, proceed to Microsoft Support.
