Looking to unlock some Access files, but there is nothing beyond the "General" tab, when delvling into "Properties"

Use PowerShell’s Unblock-File command when the Unblock checkbox is absent from the file’s General properties tab; it performs the same operation as that checkbox. ^1^

    Unblock the Access file

Only do this after verifying that the database came from a trusted source.

    1. Close the database in Access.
    2. Open Windows PowerShell.
    3. Check whether the file has Windows’ Zone.Identifier marker:
    $file = 'C:\Users\YourName\Downloads\Database.accdb'

    Get-Item -LiteralPath $file `
        -Stream 'Zone.Identifier' `
        -ErrorAction SilentlyContinue

    1. If the command displays a Zone.Identifier stream, remove it:
    Unblock-File -LiteralPath `
        'C:\Users\YourName\Downloads\Database.accdb'

    1. Reopen the database.

To process several trusted Access files in one folder:

    Get-ChildItem 'C:\Data\AccessFiles' -File |
Where-Object Extension -in '.accdb', '.accde', '.accdr', '.accdt' |
        Unblock-File

Review every file first: the command removes the downloaded-from-Internet marker. If a file has no such marker, Unblock-File makes no change and reports no error. ^1^

    If there is no Zone.Identifier

The missing checkbox generally means Windows has no Internet-zone marker to remove. ^2^ If Access still disables macros, VBA, queries, or other active content, trust the database through Access instead:

    • For a one-time decision, open the database and select Enable Content on the Message Bar.
    • For a database used regularly:
      1. Open Access → File → Options.
      2. Select Trust Center → Trust Center Settings.
      3. Select Trusted Locations → Add new location.
      4. Choose a dedicated folder containing only databases you trust.
      5. Move the database into that folder and reopen it.

Access treats databases in that folder as trusted and enables their content by default. ^3^

Do not designate a general-purpose folder such as Downloads as trusted. Every file placed in a trusted location bypasses some Office security checks. ^4^

If Add new location is unavailable, or the database is on a network share that Access refuses to trust, an organizational policy may control Trusted Locations; the Microsoft 365 administrator must configure an approved location. Network Trusted Locations are disabled by default and can be managed through policy. ^5^

It might also help if you could post some screenshots. Can you post an image of what you see when you open the file properties? Also, can you post an image of what you see in Access that made you think you need to "unblock" the database? Thank you.

First, explain what you mean by "unlock".

Also, explain the context and the goal.

    Thank you.
