Overseeing the deployment and compliance of software updates across managed devices using Intune
Run Microsoft’s Family Safety refresh task to clear restrictions that can remain on a PC even when the adult account is not in a Microsoft family group.^1^
Clear the Family Safety settings
- Visit
https://account.microsoft.com/familyand sign in with the same Microsoft account used in Windows. - If no family members appear, continue with the reset below. If a family appears, see the next section.
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter
cmd, then select OK. - Run:
schtasks /run /tn "Microsoft\Windows\Shell\FamilySafetyRefreshTask"
- Restart the computer.
Repeat this on every affected PC. This refreshes the device’s Family Safety policy; it does not delete personal files.
If a Microsoft family group appears
A Microsoft family group is an online account arrangement and does not depend on who lives with you.
- Select the menu beside your name and choose Leave family group.
- If that option is unavailable, an organizer may need to remove the account.
- Leaving does not delete the Microsoft account, but it can end access to shared purchases or a shared Microsoft 365 Family subscription.^2^
After leaving, run the refresh command again and restart Windows.
If Microsoft incorrectly classifies the account as a child because its recorded birth date is wrong, correct the account information using the procedure under “I’m an adult, but Microsoft thinks I’m a child.”^3^
Check whether Intune or another organization is changing settings
Family Safety and organizational device management are separate systems. To see whether Intune, an employer, or a school manages this computer:
- Open Settings → Accounts → Access work or school.
- Inspect every listed connection.
- Select a connection:
- An Info button indicates a device-management connection and displays policies or installed business applications.
- Disconnect generally removes a work connection, although an organization can prohibit manual removal.^4^
Only disconnect an account if this is your personally owned computer and you no longer need that organization’s access. Disconnecting can cause loss of organization-controlled data or access. If it is a work-owned device, contact its administrator instead.
If neither a family group nor a work/school management connection exists, but settings continue changing after the Family Safety reset, use Contact Support from Microsoft’s Family Safety support page.^1^
