Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
Whether the account can be restored depends on the exact sign-in message: reset the password for a temporary Outlook.com block, or submit the reinstatement form linked from the suspension notice if the Microsoft account is locked.
If the message says the account is temporarily blocked
Microsoft may temporarily block Outlook.com after detecting unusual sign-in activity. Use the Unblock account button on Microsoft’s Outlook.com unblocking page and complete the password reset and security-code prompts.^1^
If the security code or password change does not unblock it, select When you can’t sign in to your Microsoft account on that page and use the sign-in assistance offered there.
If the message says the account is locked or suspended
- Try signing in at
account.microsoft.com. - If the sign-in window displays a link beginning with aka.ms/, select that exact link.
- Complete the account-reinstatement form with accurate information and provide a working contact email.
- Wait for Microsoft Online Safety to review the request and respond by email.
- Do not submit duplicate requests, because Microsoft states that this can slow the review.^2^
A suspension can be associated with activity that might violate Microsoft’s terms, including spam, unsolicited commercial messages, phishing, malware, automated account creation, or other harmful activity. These are general categories—not confirmation of why this particular account was suspended. The sign-in notice and the outcome of Microsoft’s review are the sources for the account-specific decision.^2^
If this is an identity-verification problem instead
Use Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper first. If it directs you to the recovery form:
- Provide a separate working email where Microsoft can contact you.
- Complete the form from a device and location previously used with the Hotmail account, if possible.
- Supply as much matching information as possible, including exact email subject lines, contacts, and old passwords.
- Expect the result at the contact address within 24 hours. If verification fails, Microsoft permits another attempt, up to twice per day.^3^
The recovery form cannot override inaccessible two-step-verification methods. Microsoft support agents also cannot manually disclose account details, change security information, or bypass the reinstatement/recovery process.^3^
Because this address is intended for business use, avoid making it the sole administrative or customer-contact address until access is restored and recovery methods are configured. Also, do not post the full address, passwords, security codes, or recovery details in this public forum.
