A family of Microsoft presentation graphics products that offer tools for creating presentations and adding graphic effects like multimedia objects and special effects with text.
On a Windows PC, run an Online Repair of Microsoft 365 or Office because the file-level Open and Repair option you tried cannot repair the PowerPoint application itself.
1. Run Online Repair
Close all Office applications first.
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three dots beside it, then Modify.
- Select Online Repair → Repair.
- Complete the prompts, restart the computer if requested, and then launch PowerPoint directly from the Start menu.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select Modify.
- Choose Online Repair → Repair and complete the prompts.
Online Repair repairs the entire Office installation and is more thorough than Quick Repair.^1^
2. If PowerPoint still will not start, test Safe Mode
Safe Mode starts PowerPoint without its add-ins:
- Press Windows key + R.
- Enter:
powerpnt /safe
- Press Enter.
If PowerPoint opens and its title bar says Safe Mode:
- Select File → Options → Add-ins.
- At the bottom, choose COM Add-ins under Manage, then select Go.
- Clear the add-in check boxes and select OK.
- Close PowerPoint and open it normally.
- Re-enable add-ins one at a time to identify the one causing the startup failure.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/office/lifecycle/i-get-a-stopped-working-error-when-i-start-office-applications-on-my-pc "I get a "stopped working" error when I start Office applications on my PC | Microsoft Support")
If PowerPoint does not start in Safe Mode, add-ins are not the issue. If Online Repair has also failed, uninstall and reinstall Office next.[^2^](https://support.microsoft.com/office/lifecycle/i-get-a-stopped-working-error-when-i-start-office-applications-on-my-pc "I get a "stopped working" error when I start Office applications on my PC | Microsoft Support")
3. Reinstall only if Online Repair fails
Before uninstalling, ensure that the Microsoft account or work/school account associated with Office is available.
- Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select its menu and choose Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Sign in to the Microsoft 365 Apps page using the account associated with the license.
- Select Install apps, run the installer, and then open PowerPoint to activate it.^3^
If this is a Mac rather than Windows, do not use the Windows repair steps; the exact macOS version and Office edition are needed to select the correct recovery procedure.
