Run an Online Repair of Microsoft Office first, because the displayed message specifically directs you to repair the Office installation.
Repair Office
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or your Microsoft Office edition.
- Select the three dots next to it, then Modify.
- Select Online Repair → Repair.
- Complete the prompts, restart Windows, and open Word.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start → Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office, then select Modify.
- Select Online Repair → Repair.
- Complete the repair, restart Windows, and test Word.
Online Repair is more comprehensive than Quick Repair and repairs the whole Office suite, even when only Word is affected.^1^
Windows 8/8.1 or an older Control Panel installation
- Open Control Panel → Programs → Uninstall a program.
- Right-click your Microsoft Office suite and select Change.
- For Click-to-Run Office, choose Online Repair → Repair.
- For an MSI-based installation, choose Repair → Continue.^2^
Save your work and ensure that you have Internet access before starting Online Repair.
If Word still reports that it cannot verify the license
Work through these checks in order:
- Check the account associated with Office.
Sign in to the Microsoft Services & subscriptions page using the account originally used to buy or redeem Office. Confirm that the Office product or Microsoft 365 subscription appears there. If it does not, try any other personal, work, or school account that may have been used for the purchase.
- Check for conflicting Office installations.
Open Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features, then search for Office. If multiple Office versions are installed, uninstall only the version you no longer use, restart Windows, and open Word again. Multiple installations can cause activation conflicts.
- Check the subscription status.
If this is Microsoft 365, verify that the subscription is active rather than expired or cancelled.
- Run the activation troubleshooter.
For Microsoft 365 on Windows 10 or later, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter from Microsoft’s activation support page on the affected computer.^3^
Also verify that Windows has the correct date, time, and time zone, since incorrect settings can prevent Office activation. If needed, close Office, search for Word, right-click it, and select Run as administrator once to test for an activation-permission problem.^3^
Last resort: reinstall Office
If Online Repair and activation troubleshooting both fail, uninstall and reinstall Office. Before uninstalling, confirm that the product or subscription is visible under the correct Microsoft account so it can be downloaded and activated again. Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter supports Microsoft 365 and Office 2021, 2019, and 2016 on Windows 10 or later; it currently does not uninstall Office 2024.^1^
