Dear Microsoft Support Team,

I am experiencing a serious issue with Microsoft Family Safety while trying to set up my children’s accounts on a new laptop.

Account Details:

  • Parent’s Microsoft account: My personal Hotmail account [Moderator note: PII removed].
  • Child/Family account: [Moderator note: PII removed]@hotmail.com
  • Child’s date of birth: [Moderator note: PII removed].
  • Parent’s date of birth: [Moderator note: PII removed].

Description of the Issue:

I created my children’s Microsoft accounts and entered my personal Hotmail address as the alternate/parent contact email.

When trying to accept the family invitation and complete the parental consent process, I get stuck in an endless verification loop.

My personal account is verified, and my date of birth confirms that I am over 18 years old.

However, Microsoft keeps displaying the following error messages:

  1. “This account cannot give parental consent. Please ask a parent or guardian to sign in.”
  2. “You are not authorized to approve.”

I have tried the following:

  • Verified my personal Hotmail email address using the security code.
  • Confirmed my date of birth.
  • Accepted the pending family invitation.
  • Signed in using both the parent and child accounts.
  • Tried accepting the invitation through Microsoft Family Safety.
  • Tried different browsers and private browsing sessions.

Unfortunately, I keep getting redirected to the same parental consent screen.

What I Need From Microsoft:

  1. Please investigate why my personal Microsoft account is not authorized to provide parental consent.
  2. Please check whether the child account is linked to an incorrect or different parent/guardian account.
  3. Please help me resolve the parental consent authorization loop.
  4. Please help me activate the existing child account without deleting or recreating it.

I would appreciate it if this issue could be escalated to the Microsoft Family Safety technical support team.

Please provide a support case number and assist me in resolving this issue through written communication.

Thank you for your assistance.

Best regards

    Hello Yasar Oqdeh,

Based on the error messages, Microsoft may not be recognizing the current parent account as authorized to approve the child account, possibly due to an incomplete account verification.

Please note that this is a user-to-user support forum, we can only offer suggestions based on available information and our observations; we cannot access your accounts or investigate and correct the parental-consent record.

Here are some suggestions you can try:

    1. Please also check the country or region listed on both Microsoft accounts and make sure the parent and child accounts are set to the same country or region before trying the consent process again.
    2. Sign in to Manage Consent using the parent’s personal adult Microsoft account. If the child appears, select the account and check whether consent can be completed or managed.
    3. Open the Microsoft Family dashboard and confirm that the parent is listed as an Organizer.
    4. Follow the parental-consent guidance and use the Sign in option under How to provide parental consent to restart the process.
    5. You can also sign in to the child’s Windows account and open Settings > Accounts > Your info. If a Verify option appears, select it and complete the verification using the child’s Microsoft account details. After verification, restart the laptop and try the parental-consent process again.

If the issue continues, you can test with another parent or guardian’s adult personal Microsoft account. If neither account can approve the child, please contact Microsoft Support and ask them to check whether the child’s consent is linked to another adult account or whether there is an account-level authorization issue.

Here's how to reach out to the Microsoft Support Team (live chat):

    1.  Go to: https://support.microsoft.com/home/contact
    2. In the search box, enter a short description of your issue, then choose "Get Help"
    3. Scroll down and select Sign in to contact support (please sign in using a personal Microsoft account). Then follow the on-screen prompts to reach Support Team.

    Tips:

    • Support chat availability may vary by country/region, product, and support hours. If you can't get in touch with a chat agent right away, trying again later or at a different time may help.
    • If the support page directs you to the automated assistant, type “I need a live agent” in the chat.

Hopefully your issue will be sorted out soon. Thank you so much for your patience!
