A brief Command Prompt window at startup can be caused by a normal startup task, but it can also come from a startup app, a scheduled task, or unwanted software.
Start with these checks:
- Open Task Manager with Ctrl+Shift+Esc.
- Select the Startup or Startup apps tab.
- Review the list and look at the impact column.
- Disable anything unfamiliar or unnecessary, then restart and test.
Disabling a startup app only stops it from launching automatically. It does not remove the app, and it can still be opened normally later.
If nothing obvious appears in Startup apps, use a clean boot approach to isolate the cause:
- Open Search, type msconfig, and open System Configuration.
- In clean boot troubleshooting, after testing services, open Task Manager from the Startup tab.
- Re-enable startup items in small groups, restarting after each change, until the Command Prompt window returns.
- When the issue returns after enabling one item, that startup item is the likely cause.
If the flashing window is tied to unwanted software, check Settings > Apps > Installed apps and uninstall software that is unfamiliar or recently added.
If Startup settings shows We couldn’t find this app, that usually means a broken startup entry. Windows startup entries can exist in these registry locations:
-
HKLM\Software\Wow6432Node\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
-
HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
-
HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run
Changing the registry can have unintended consequences. Back up the registry before making changes.
Task Manager can also help identify whether the startup item has Low, Medium, or High impact, which is useful when narrowing down the cause.
