An application or feature powered by Windows Copilot to assist users with tasks and productivity
There is no publicly documented operation to repair, split, reindex, or restore an individual oversized Copilot thread; the supported path is to try the legacy experience if migration is incomplete, export the activity history, and report the affected conversation to Microsoft.
1. Check the legacy experience—but only if this is a personal account
This differs from retrying the current web interface. Microsoft documents that personal accounts may be at different stages of migration:
- Open a private/InPrivate browser window.
- Go directly to https://copilot.microsoft.com.
- Sign in using the exact original account and provider:
- Microsoft account, or
- Continue with Google, or
- Continue with Apple.
- Observe the redirect:
- If the browser remains at
copilot.microsoft.com, the account has not migrated fully. Open the conversation there and immediately copy recoverable sections into a document. - If it redirects to
copilot.com, the account has moved or is completing migration, so the legacy route is unavailable.
- If the browser remains at
Microsoft specifically identifies account/provider mismatches and incomplete migration as causes of inaccessible content.^1^
2. Export the activity history
For a personal Microsoft account:
- Sign in to the Microsoft privacy dashboard.
- Go to Privacy → Empower your productivity → Copilot → Your Copilot app activity history.
- Select the applicable category:
- Copilot apps, then Export all activity history; or
- Copilot in Microsoft 365 apps, then Export all Copilot Chat activity history.
- Download and open the resulting CSV.
- Search it for distinctive phrases from the affected conversation.
The export can recover stored prompts and responses without requiring the conversation UI to render.^2^ However, it is not documented as a full-fidelity conversation backup and may not reconstruct the complete 196,000-line thread in its original layout, grouping, or order.
Do not select Delete all activity history while attempting recovery.
3. Report the specific thread for service-side investigation
Because other conversations work and this one fails in both current clients, general Windows blank-screen or connectivity repairs are unlikely to address this isolated thread.
In Copilot:
- Select … in the upper-right corner.
- Select Send feedback → Report a problem.
- Include:
- The conversation title.
- Approximate size: 196,000 lines.
- When it last rendered successfully.
- Windows version and browser/app versions.
- That it starts rendering and then produces a white screen or Chrome Page Unresponsive.
- That other conversations load normally.
- A screenshot and approximate timestamp.
- A direct request to preserve the thread and determine whether its stored interaction data can be exported.
Microsoft documents this route for persistent content problems in the updated Copilot app.^1^ Public Q&A participants cannot access or restore account data, and there is currently no confirmed user-side recovery for content that remains blank across Copilot surfaces.^3^
Feedback creates an engineering report, but Microsoft does not publicly promise that support can split, reindex, or mutate a particular personal conversation.
If this is a work or school account
Ask the Microsoft 365 administrator to open a service request and investigate data recovery separately from UI repair.
Microsoft 365 stores prompts and responses as Copilot activity history. Administrators can use Microsoft Purview Content Search for stored interaction data.^4^
For licensed enterprise environments, Microsoft also documents a Copilot Activity Export API that exports prompts and responses across supported Microsoft 365 Copilot apps. It requires:
- Administrator-approved application permission
AiEnterpriseInteraction.Read.All. - A Microsoft Copilot license.^5^
These administrative methods may recover interaction records, but they are not documented as tools for repairing or splitting the original UI thread.
Practical outcome
- Reindex/repair/split in place: No documented user or tenant-admin capability.
- Backend recovery by engineering: Not a publicly documented or guaranteed service; submit a problem report or organizational support request.
- Personal-account recovery: Try the legacy migration route, then export activity history.
- Work/school recovery: Have an administrator use Purview or the licensed Copilot Activity Export API and open a Microsoft 365 support request.
- Future long-form work: Keep canonical material in Word, OneNote, Loop, or another independently saved document rather than one continuously growing chat.
