Unblock the Hotmail account in a web browser first, then replace the password stored in the Epson’s email settings before attempting another scan.
1. Clear the Hotmail account restriction
Since repeated Scan to Email attempts have not worked, stop retrying from the printer until the account is accessible:
- Open a browser and sign in to the affected Hotmail account at
account.microsoft.com.
- Complete the security-code prompt if one appears.
- If Outlook.com reports that the account is temporarily blocked, follow its unblock process and reset the Microsoft account password. Microsoft identifies password reset as the required Outlook.com unblock action.^1^
- Confirm that Outlook.com opens normally and send an ordinary test email from the browser.
Then open Microsoft account → Security → Review activity:
- If the printer-related attempt is recognizable, confirm that it was yours.
- If any activity is unfamiliar, select This wasn’t me or Secure your account, then change the password.^2^
2. Reauthorize the Epson
A password reset makes the password saved in the printer obsolete. Open the Epson’s Scan to Email/Email Server/SMTP settings and replace the stored credentials.
For a consumer Hotmail/Outlook.com account, Microsoft documents these outgoing-mail settings:^3^
- SMTP server:
smtp-mail.outlook.com
- Port:
587
- Encryption:
STARTTLS
- Username: the complete Hotmail address
- Authentication:
OAuth2 or Modern Authentication
- Password: the newly reset Microsoft account password, if requested through the supported sign-in flow
Save the settings, run the printer’s email-server connection test if available, and then send one small test scan.
If the Epson does not offer OAuth2
Outlook.com requires OAuth2/Modern Authentication for its documented SMTP configuration. If the printer provides only username-and-password authentication, its firmware or Scan to Email implementation might not support the required method.^3^
Check the printer’s authentication choices or ask Epson whether that exact 4380 model and firmware support Outlook.com OAuth2.
Conditional alternative: If two-step verification is enabled on the Microsoft account and the printer is an older device that cannot handle it, create an app password under Microsoft account → Advanced security options → App passwords, then enter that generated password in the printer instead of the normal account password. App passwords apply only when two-step verification is enabled and the device does not support it.^4^
If the account cannot be unblocked
- Use the Microsoft account sign-in helper linked from the unblock page.^1^
- If the sign-in page does not show Let’s prove you’re human, follow the
aka.ms reinstatement link displayed in that window. Submit the reinstatement request once; Microsoft advises that duplicate submissions can delay review.^5^
Do not continue testing from the printer while account recovery is pending, because those attempts cannot succeed until browser sign-in and sending work normally.
