Need help recovering an email I no longer have access too

I'm hoping someone can help me with an issue regarding an old Microsoft email account that I created in 2023 and unfortunately no longer have access to.

I've tried using Microsoft's account recovery form several times, but every time I submit it, I'm told that there isn't enough information to verify that I'm the owner of the account. I've tried my best to provide the information I can remember, but because the account was created a few years ago, I can't remember every detail.

The main reason I'm so desperate to get this email account back is because it's the email address linked to my Discord account. I've had this Discord account for a long time and have spent quite a bit of money on it, so losing access to it would be really upsetting.

The problem is that I can't change or remove the email address from my Discord account without having access to the original email. Discord requires me to verify changes through that email address, which I obviously can't do anymore. I do have my phone number linked to my Discord account, but unfortunately, the email address is still the primary contact and recovery method.

I've already contacted Discord Support to explain my situation and ask if there was any other way to change the email address or verify that the Discord account belongs to me. Unfortunately, they told me there was nothing they could do because I couldn't confirm ownership of the email address currently linked to the account.

I also believe I would have received emails from Discord when I originally created my account and possibly purchase receipts, verification emails and other account notifications. However, I can't remember whether I ever sent any emails from the Microsoft account myself, which makes filling out the recovery form even more difficult.

I'm genuinely worried about what could happen if my Discord account was ever hacked or compromised. Because I no longer have access to the email address linked to it, I wouldn't be able to receive recovery emails or properly secure my account. Considering the time and money I've put into my Discord account, the thought of potentially losing it permanently is really concerning.

At this point, I feel stuck between Microsoft and Discord. Microsoft can't recover my email account because I can't provide enough information, and Discord can't help me change the email address because I can't verify ownership of the email currently linked to it.

I completely understand that Microsoft has security measures in place to prevent people from accessing accounts that don't belong to them. I just want to know if there is any other way I can prove that the account belongs to me or if there is another recovery option available.

Is there any way to speak to someone who can look into my situation, or is there any alternative method of recovering an account when the standard recovery form isn't accepting the information provided?

Microsoft Support cannot manually reset the password, change the account’s security details, or override a failed ownership check; after the unsuccessful submissions, the practical next step is to collect new, exact evidence and make a targeted recovery attempt from a previously used device and location.^1^

    1. Check whether the account still exists

Enter the old address on the Microsoft account sign-in page:

    • Password prompt: the account still exists; continue below.
    • “That Microsoft account doesn’t exist” or “We couldn’t find an account with that username”: check the complete address and domain carefully. If correct, the account may have been closed.^2^

This matters because Microsoft generally considers an account inactive if it has not been signed into for two years, subject to listed exceptions such as certain Microsoft purchases, active subscriptions, or account balances.^3^

    2. Gather stronger evidence before another submission

Since repeating the same information has already failed, do not submit again until something new can be added:

    1. Search saved passwords on every browser, phone, tablet, and computer used with the account. Record any old Microsoft-account passwords; Microsoft specifically asks for previous passwords.
    2. Use the original device and network/location, if still available—for example, the computer and home connection used in 2023.
    3. Check other inboxes, screenshots, password managers, and browser history for:
      • The exact Outlook address and domain.
      • Microsoft security or welcome messages.
      • The approximate creation date.
      • Old passwords.
    4. Ask anyone who may have received email from that address for the exact subject lines and recipient addresses. Subject lines must be exact.
    5. Use historical registration details, not necessarily current details: the name, location, birth date, or postal code entered when the account was created.
    6. Add information about any Microsoft services used with that account, such as Skype or Xbox, if applicable.

Microsoft states that guessing is acceptable when uncertain and that wrong answers do not count against you, but exact and complete answers provide a better chance of verification.^4^

Discord receipts or verification messages received by the Outlook account cannot be retrieved without access. They may help only if the recovery form asks for matching mailbox details and the exact requested information can be reconstructed elsewhere.

    3. Use the Sign-in Helper before the next form attempt

Run Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper with the old email address. It checks the account details and either identifies a specific account problem or directs you to the applicable recovery option.^5^

If it directs you back to the recovery form, submit only after gathering the new evidence above. Microsoft permits up to two attempts per day and normally sends the result to the working contact address within 24 hours.^4^

    Important limitation

If two-step verification was enabled and none of its alternate verification methods is accessible, Microsoft states that it cannot restore access. Support representatives are also prohibited from sending a reset link or changing account details, so speaking to an agent cannot bypass the automated ownership verification.^4^

Because Discord Support has already declined to change the linked address, there is no Microsoft-side method to prove Discord ownership through the linked phone number or purchase history. While still signed into Discord anywhere, preserve any available account data and strengthen every security option Discord permits without email confirmation, but avoid signing out until the email issue is resolved.
