Outlook for Android Fails to Post Android Notification on Account Login Failure

2026-10-31T21:38:18.84+00:00

When my account login expires and Outlook for Android needs a new token from the authenticator, it is just failing silently without posting an Android notification. The user only looks in the app when there is an Android notification so doesn't see the in-app notification of the problem.

    Hi Alexander,

    Thank you for reaching out.

Bases on your description, the issue appears to occur when Outlook’s sign-in token expires and Microsoft Authenticator does not display the expected Android notification or approval prompt.

To resolve the issue, please follow these steps:

    1. Enable all Authenticator notifications
    • Open Android Settings.
    • Go to Apps > Microsoft Authenticator > Notifications.
    • Turn on Allow notifications.
    • Enable all available notification categories.

    User's image

    • If displayed, enable:
      • Pop on screen
      • Show as pop-up
      • Floating notifications
      • Lock screen notifications
      • Notification sounds and vibration
    • Make sure the notifications are not configured as Silent or Minimized.
    1. Remove battery restrictions
    • Open Settings > Apps > Microsoft Authenticator > Battery.
    • Select Unrestricted, No restrictions, or Don’t optimize, depending on the device.

    User's image

    • Allow Authenticator to run in the background.
    • Temporarily turn off Battery Saver or Power Saving Mode while testing.
    1. Allow background data and activity
    • Go to Settings > Apps > Microsoft Authenticator > Mobile data.
    • Enable Background data.

    User's image

    • Enable Unrestricted data usage, depending on the device.
    • Confirm that background activity and automatic startup are permitted for Authenticator.

I hope your issue gets resolved soon. Any updates would be greatly appreciated.
