Test Teams in a private browser window and then connect the desktop app through a mobile hotspot; this separates an account/service problem from a blocked or interrupted desktop network path.
1. Isolate the failure
- Open an InPrivate/Incognito browser window.
- Go to Teams on the web and sign in with the same account.
- Interpret the result:
- Web works: the account is usable; continue with the desktop and network checks below.
- Web also fails: record the complete error and contact Microsoft Support for a Teams Free/personal account, or your IT administrator for a work/school account.
- Connect the computer to a different network, preferably a mobile hotspot, and retry the desktop app.
If desktop sign-in succeeds on the hotspot, investigate the original network’s proxy, VPN, DNS/content filtering, firewall, or security software. Hotspot success implicates that network path, but does not by itself identify a particular firewall rule. Microsoft notes that many Teams client connectivity problems involve firewall or proxy access to required Microsoft 365 endpoints.^1^
2. Remove network-path interference
On the affected computer:
- Quit Teams completely from the taskbar/system tray.
- If connected through a VPN, disconnect it and retry. If Teams requires that VPN, reconnect it once and test again; this is part of Microsoft’s reconnect guidance.^2^
- Temporarily test without third-party web filtering or antivirus web protection, if permitted.
- If this is a managed work/school device, ask IT to check:
- Proxy and firewall access to Microsoft 365/Teams endpoints
- HTTPS inspection or content filtering
- Whether another security application is preventing Teams connectivity
Do not permanently disable security software; use the temporary test only to identify whether it is involved.
3. Repair the desktop installation
Because the Teams version and operating system were not specified, avoid manually deleting a cache folder: classic Teams and current Teams clients do not necessarily use the same local storage.
Instead:
- Quit Teams.
- Open the operating system’s installed-app management page and uninstall Microsoft Teams.
- Restart the computer.
- Reinstall the current Teams client from Microsoft and sign in again.
Microsoft lists clearing the applicable client cache and uninstalling/reinstalling Teams as reconnect options.^2^
4. Escalate with the useful diagnostics
If the error remains:
- Teams Free/personal account: contact Microsoft Support and provide:
-
online_check_failed: exceeded retry attempts
-
Failed to connect to settings endpoint
- Whether Teams web works
- Whether a mobile hotspot works
- Operating system and Teams version
- Work/school account: send the same details to the organization’s IT administrator. Microsoft advises involving the administrator when an unlisted Teams sign-in status cannot be resolved locally.^3^
If several users or devices began failing simultaneously, the administrator should also check for a Microsoft 365 service incident before changing individual devices.
