    Hi Minspi,

On current Windows 11 Insider builds, there isn’t a supported setting to make the legacy context menu the permanent default. Registry workarounds that previously forced the classic menu may also stop working as Windows shell behavior changes.

For now, the quickest alternatives are:

    • Shift + F10 to open the classic context menu directly.
    • Shift + right-click where supported to access the expanded/classic options.
    • Use Show more options from the new context menu.

Since you’re on an Insider build, I’d also recommend submitting this preference through Feedback Hub (Windows + F) > Desktop Environment > Right click context menu, as this is the appropriate channel for Windows Insider design feedback.

Please note that this is a user-to-user support forum. Moderators, contributors including external Microsoft employees cannot directly intervene in Microsoft product features or access back-end systems. Our role is limited to providing technical guidance on reported issues, requests, or ideas.

I hope one of the shortcuts makes the workflow a little less disruptive in the meantime.

The latest Insider update does not provide a supported setting to make the legacy menu the default; use Shift + right-click to open the classic menu directly, or customize the updated menu to resemble your preferred layout.

    Customize the new menu

If your build includes the redesigned context menu:

    1. Right-click a file, folder, or the desktop.
    2. Select Customize menu at the bottom.
    3. Configure the menu to:
      • Display Cut, Copy, Paste, Rename, Delete, and Share as text commands instead of icons.
      • Add commands such as Print.
      • Enable built-in commands such as Send to and Create shortcut.
      • Move app extensions into the main menu or a submenu.
      • Move Properties to the bottom.

These options are being gradually rolled out, so Customize menu might not yet appear on every Insider device running the relevant build.^1^

    Open the legacy menu immediately

    Use either shortcut:

    • Hold Shift while right-clicking.
    • Select the item and press Shift + F10 or the keyboard Menu key.

Windows documents these as direct ways to load the older Windows 10 menu.^2^ Without the keyboard shortcut, select Show more options at the bottom of the modern menu.^3^

    About registry workarounds

Registry modifications commonly suggested online are not documented by Microsoft as a supported default-menu setting for the latest Insider implementation. Since Insider shell behavior can change between builds, an older workaround may stop working or produce unexpected Explorer behavior. Back up the registry before testing any third-party workaround, and expect that a later Insider update may reverse it.

If permanent legacy-menu selection is important, submit it through Feedback Hub → Desktop Environment → File Explorer as a feature request. The currently documented direction is customization of the updated menu rather than restoring the legacy menu as the default.^4^
