An Azure service that is used to provision Windows and Linux virtual machines.
Exhausted Azure for Students credit is not ordinarily reset; submit a free billing/subscription ticket for review, but plan to renew at the 12-month point if eligible or upgrade to pay-as-you-go to resume the course immediately.
Bypass the AI support loop
- Open the Azure Help + support blade directly:
https://portal.azure.com/#view/Microsoft_Azure_Support/HelpAndSupportBlade/~/overview - Select Create a support request.
- If displayed, select Switch to old experience.
- Enter billing, select Go, choose Billing, and then select the affected Azure for Students subscription.
- After the suggested solutions load, select Create a support request at the top rather than opening a suggested solution.
- Complete Summary, Problem type, and Problem subtype, explaining:
- The VM unintentionally exhausted the student credit.
- The subscription is now unusable for coursework.
- The normal support workflow is looping or disabled.
- You are requesting a billing review and clarification of any available education options.
- If another recommendations page appears, do not select a recommendation. Select Return to support request, then Next.
- Complete Additional details, including the subscription ID, proceed to Review + create, and select Create.
This sequence has been used specifically to get past Azure's recommended-solution loop and reach the billing team.^1^ Billing and subscription support does not require a paid technical support plan.^2^
What to expect
Azure for Students supplies $100 for 12 months. When that credit is exhausted, Azure disables the services and subscription. The documented way to continue before renewal is to upgrade to pay-as-you-go; remaining free-service entitlements continue for the original 12-month period, but usage beyond their limits is charged.^3^
The supported choices are:
- If the 12-month anniversary has arrived: renew the Azure for Students offer, provided student eligibility is still valid.
- If the credit was exhausted before that anniversary: upgrade to pay-as-you-go, which requires accepting future usage charges.
- If neither is possible: ask the course provider for a temporary lab subscription, sandbox, deadline extension, or another environment. Microsoft’s published student-offer guidance does not document an early credit reset as a standard option.^4^
If the ticket button remains unavailable
A support request for the subscription requires Owner, Contributor, Support Request Contributor, or equivalent Microsoft.Support/* permissions at subscription scope.^2^ If this is an institution-managed subscription and those permissions are missing, the university’s Azure administrator must submit the request or assign the required role.
If the direct Azure blade still cannot create a ticket despite the correct role, use Microsoft’s public support page and select Get help, then Contact Support for account or billing assistance.^5^
Avoid deploying or restarting resources after upgrading until budgets and cost alerts are configured, because pay-as-you-go usage is chargeable.
