Set the phone’s USB connection to File Transfer (MTP) after connecting it, because Android commonly defaults to charging-only mode and will not appear for file access in that state.^1^
Connect in file-transfer mode
- Unlock the Android phone.
- Connect it directly to the laptop—do not use a USB hub.
- Swipe down from the top of the phone to open notifications.
- Tap the notification named Charging this device via USB, USB options, or similar.
- Select File Transfer, Transfer files, or MTP.
- Keep the phone unlocked, then open File Explorer → Computer on Windows 8. The phone should appear as a portable device; open it to access Internal storage, DCIM, or other folders.
Windows uses Media Transfer Protocol (MTP) through its Windows Portable Devices infrastructure to communicate with phones and other media devices.^2^
If the phone still does not appear
- Try another data-capable USB cable. Some cables supply power but have no working data connection.
- Try another USB port directly on the laptop. If the phone charges but Windows makes no connection sound, the cable or port remains the likely connection point to isolate.^1^
- On Windows, press Windows key+X → Device Manager.
- Connect the unlocked phone in MTP mode and look under:
- Portable Devices
- Other devices
- Universal Serial Bus controllers
- If the phone or an unknown device has a yellow warning symbol:
- Right-click it and select Update Driver Software.
- Choose Search automatically for updated driver software.
- Disconnect and reconnect the phone after installation.
Microsoft supplies MTP class drivers through the WpdMtp.inf setup file, so an MTP-compatible phone can use the Windows portable-device driver unless the device has unique manufacturer requirements.^3^
If Device Manager shows an error that automatic updating does not resolve, note the exact device name and Properties → General → Device status error. Install the Windows USB/MTP driver supplied by the phone manufacturer if that model requires one.
Photos-only fallback
If the phone offers Photo transfer (PTP) but MTP fails, select PTP and check whether its camera folder becomes accessible. PTP supports photos, while MTP is the appropriate choice for general file transfer.^2^
