Building and customizing solutions using Microsoft 365 Copilot APIs and tools
There is currently no supported single switch that removes every Copilot component and interface element from a Microsoft 365 work environment; the closest tenant-wide result requires blocking Copilot Chat, disabling in-app connected experiences, and closing alternate-account access separately.
1. Complete the tenant-wide block
Since Copilot is already blocked in Integrated Apps, do not repeat that change. Allow up to 24 hours from the last modification for it to propagate, then restart the Microsoft 365 applications and sign in again. A closely matching Windows/business case reported that Copilot remained functional initially but became disabled approximately 24 hours after the controls were applied.^1^
The Integrated Apps block controls the Copilot app across Microsoft Copilot, Outlook, Teams, and Copilot Chat on the web. It must target the Copilot app directly; disabling the general “Let users access Microsoft apps in your tenant” setting does not disable Copilot.^2^
If it has already been more than 24 hours, test functionality rather than the presence of an icon:
- Open Copilot Chat. A blocked user should receive the organization-disabled message.
- In Word, try invoking the visible prompt. If it cannot process the document, access is blocked even though the client still renders an entry point.
- If Copilot remains functional, continue with the next two controls.
2. Disable Copilot inside Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote
Blocking the Copilot app does not constitute one universal control for every in-app experience. For managed work accounts, use Microsoft 365 Apps privacy policy to disable connected experiences that analyze content for the required users.
In Microsoft 365 Apps admin center:
- Open Customization → Policy Management.
- Create or edit a policy scoped to All users, or to the affected group.
- Disable the policy that allows connected experiences which analyze content.
- Publish the policy, restart the Office applications after it applies, and test Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote.
Microsoft documents that turning off connected experiences which analyze content makes Copilot unavailable in those applications on current Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android clients.^3^
If maximum removal is more important than retaining cloud features, disable Allow the use of connected experiences in Office instead. This is broader: it also disables online content, optional connected experiences, coauthoring, and online file storage, although essential licensing and limited functionality remain available.^4^
3. Close the alternate-account route
A user can potentially use Copilot licensed through another signed-in account—even when your organization did not assign that user a Copilot license.
In Cloud Policy, find Multiple account access to Copilot for work documents, scope it to the required users, and set it to Disabled. This prevents Copilot access supplied by a personal or external account from being used on organizational documents in supported Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and OneNote clients.^5^
Why some traces may remain
Microsoft’s personal-account Enable Copilot checkbox hides Copilot entry points, but that setting is explicitly unavailable when Office is signed in with a work or school account. It is also per application and per device—not a tenant-wide removal mechanism.^6^
Furthermore:
- Removing a ribbon icon is cosmetic and does not disable Copilot.
- A blocked service can leave cached or built-in UI elements visible until clients refresh.
- Copilot Chat cannot be globally unpinned from the Microsoft Copilot app navigation for tenants as of January 2026. The Do not pin setting still applies to supported Teams and Outlook placements, but it is not a universal removal control.^7^
- Uninstalling the Windows Copilot application does not remove Copilot code or entry points built into Microsoft 365 applications.
Consequently, the supported administrative outcome is blocked/unavailable, not guaranteed binary removal of every Copilot-related UI asset from installed Office binaries.
Submit the one-switch feature request
From Word, Excel, or another Microsoft 365 desktop application, select:
- Windows: Help → Feedback or File → Feedback
- macOS: Help → Feedback
Request a tenant-level control that both disables all Copilot services and suppresses every related entry point. Include screenshots of the remaining prompt, corner button, and selection menu; Microsoft recommends screenshots for actionable product feedback.^8^
