I am trying to install a printer driver for a new laptop and it is not recognizing the printer and brother says that you have some sort of firewall that is preventing that recognition and that you are the only ones who can fix this and I don't know where on earth to go to get the help I need but I've lost three days work because of this and I keep getting the runaround because nobody knows what to do.

    Hi, @Susan Owens

    To help narrow this down:

    1. What is the exact Brother printer model?
    2. Is the printer connected to your laptop via Wi-Fi or USB?
    3. Also, does the printer work with another computer or device?

In the meantime, if you haven't already, try these steps:

    • Restart both your printer and laptop.
    • If using Wi-Fi, make sure both devices are connected to the same network.
    • Go to Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners and check whether Windows detects the printer.
    • Temporarily disable any third-party antivirus firewall to check whether it is blocking printer discovery. Avoid turning off Windows Firewall entirely.

Let me know what happens after trying these steps.

    Thanks!

Do not disable Windows Firewall; first add the printer through Windows using the branch matching how the Brother printer connects, then address firewall discovery only if Windows still cannot find a network printer.

    1. Use the correct connection method

If the printer connects directly by USB

    1. Turn on the printer and connect it directly to the laptop—not through a dock or hub.
    2. Try another USB port if Windows does not detect it.
    3. Open:
      • Windows 11: Start → Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners
      • Windows 10: Start → Settings → Devices → Printers & scanners
    4. Select Add device or Add a printer or scanner.
    5. If it is not found, select The printer that I want isn’t listed and use the manual local-printer option. Microsoft documents the USB checks and manual installation process here: ^1^.

A firewall normally is not the relevant path for a printer connected directly by USB.

If the printer connects directly to Wi-Fi or Ethernet

    1. Use the printer’s display or network menu to confirm it is connected to the same home network as the laptop.
    2. Open Printers & scanners using the appropriate path above.
    3. Select Add device and allow several minutes for the list to populate.
    4. If the printer is not listed, select Add a new device manually and follow the network-printer prompts. Microsoft requires a wireless printer and Windows device to be on the same network for automatic discovery. ^2^

If the Brother printer already appears in the list but remains offline, select it, choose Remove, restart the laptop, and add it again. ^3^

    2. If the printer is shared from another computer

These sharing settings apply only when the Brother printer is attached to or installed on another Windows PC.

    On the host computer:

    1. Open Settings → Bluetooth & devices → Printers & scanners.
    2. Select the Brother printer and open Printer properties.
    3. Select the Sharing tab.
    4. Enable Share this printer, note the share name, and select Apply → OK.

    On the new laptop:

    1. Ensure both PCs are on the same network and the host PC is powered on and reachable.
    2. Open Settings → Network & internet → Advanced network settings → Advanced sharing settings.
    3. Under Private networks, enable Network discovery and File and printer sharing.
    4. Return to Printers & scanners → Add device → Add a new device manually.
    5. Choose Select a shared printer by name, then enter:
    \\ComputerName\PrinterShareName

The host sharing and connectivity requirements are documented here: ^4^.

    3. Check Windows Firewall safely

Only do this for a Wi-Fi/Ethernet or shared printer that still cannot be discovered.

    1. Open Windows Security → Firewall & network protection.
    2. Select the active network and confirm it is the expected Private network for your trusted home network.
    3. Ensure Blocks all incoming connections, including those in the list of allowed apps is not selected.
    4. Return to Firewall & network protection → Allow an app through firewall → Change settings.
    5. If a recognizable Brother discovery or installer application is listed, allow it on Private networks. Do not allow unknown programs.

Adding a known application is safer than opening ports, and turning off the firewall makes the laptop more vulnerable. ^5^ ^6^

    4. If it still shows Offline

    1. Open the Brother printer under Printers & scanners → Open print queue.
    2. Cancel pending print jobs.
    3. Press Windows key + R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
    4. Right-click Print Spooler and select Restart.
    5. Return to Printers & scanners, select the Brother printer, and choose Set as default. ^3^

    Copilot+ or ARM-based laptop exception

Check Settings → System → About → System type. If it says ARM-based processor, Microsoft notes that some manufacturer installers cannot add printers correctly. In that case, use Windows’ Printers & scanners → Add device procedure instead of relying on the Brother installer. ^2^

If none of these paths works, the next information needed is the exact Brother model, Windows 10 or 11, whether System type is ARM or x64, and whether the connection is USB, direct Wi-Fi/Ethernet, or shared from another PC.
