I have been successfully copying a table containing hyperlinks in Word to an Excel worksheet but suddenly the copy / paste stopped including the hyperlinks. I just get the text now.

Please advise. Thank you.

Hi Joy,

When pasting content from Word into Excel, try clicking the Paste Options button that appears after the paste operation and selecting Keep Source Formatting. Alternatively, go to Home > Paste > Paste Special and choose HTML Format, as this method is more likely to preserve hyperlinks.

To help determine where the hyperlinks are being lost, try copying a single hyperlinked cell from Word and pasting it into Excel. If the hyperlink is still not retained, the content may be getting converted to plain text during the paste process.

Another approach is to save the Word document as Web Page, Filtered (File > Save As) and then open the saved file in Excel. It is recommended to test this with a small sample first, as the results can vary depending on the document's formatting.

If the original URLs are available, you can also recreate the links in Excel by using the HYPERLINK function.

One important limitation to keep in mind is that Excel applies a hyperlink to an entire cell, not to specific portions of text within the cell. Therefore, if a Word table cell contains multiple hyperlinks, Excel may only be able to retain one hyperlink per cell after the paste operation.

If the issue continues after trying the suggestions above, please provide the following information:

  1. Which versions of Word and Excel are you using (desktop, web, or mobile)?
  2. Does the issue occur with all Word documents or only with a specific document?
  3. Which paste method are you using in Excel (Ctrl+V, Paste Special, or another option)?
  4. If you right-click a hyperlink in Word, is it a standard hyperlink or a field-generated hyperlink?

To ensure I provide the most accurate assistance, I would appreciate any additional information you can share regarding your current situation. If possible, please include screenshots, as they can be very helpful in the investigation.

Thank you for your patience and understanding. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please feel free to share them in the comments on this post.
