A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
Run Microsoft’s Sign-in Helper first because the same error has persisted for weeks in another browser, then handle the password reset and primary-email change as separate operations.^1^
1. Resolve the password-reset failure
- Open the Sign-in Helper.
- Enter the email address or phone number used to sign in.
- Complete the recommended recovery path. The tool checks for account-specific problems and directs you to the appropriate recovery action.^1^
- If offered multiple verification methods, choose one you can currently access. Microsoft must verify your identity before allowing a new password.^2^
If verification-code requests are failing, stop making repeated requests before trying again. Repetitive requests can trigger or extend a temporary security block.^3^
If none of the displayed phone numbers or email addresses are accessible, select I don’t have any of these and follow the security-information replacement prompts. Changing all security information can restrict the account for 30 days.^3^
2. Change the primary email separately
Once normal account access is restored:
- Open Edit account info.
- Select Add email and add or create the desired address.
- Complete verification for that address.
- Return to the alias list and select Make primary beside it.
Microsoft calls these associated addresses aliases. They belong to the same account and share its password, files, subscriptions, contacts, and settings.^4^
Important limitations:
- An address already associated with another Microsoft account cannot be added as an alias.
- Existing
@outlook.com,@hotmail.com,@live.com, or@msn.comaddresses cannot be moved in as aliases from elsewhere.^5^ - Do not remove the old alias until the new alias works for sign-in and has successfully become primary.
If you can sign in but alias management still produces the service error, use Microsoft’s guided alias-support tool. It is specifically provided for problems changing account email addresses or their sign-in use.^4^
3. Escalate an account-side failure
If both tools return you to the same error, open Contact Microsoft Support, enter Microsoft account password reset and primary alias service error, select Get Help, and then Contact Support if offered.
Include:
- The exact error text.
- That it has continued for weeks.
- That another browser produced the same result.
- Whether the failure occurs before or after entering the verification code.
- Whether password reset and Make primary both fail.
Support can investigate the service failure, but for account protection agents cannot send password-reset links, verification codes, or directly change account details.^4^
If this is a work or school account, do not use the personal-account alias procedure; contact the organization’s IT administrator or use its work/school password-reset process.^1^
