Recover the original Microsoft account first, because the Minecraft purchase remains tied to that account and cannot be restored by creating another account with the old email address.^1^
Recover the account
- Secure the Windows PC before changing any credentials.
- Open Windows Security → Virus & threat protection → Scan options.
- Select Full scan → Scan now.
- Microsoft recommends completing the malware scan before changing the password so that newly entered credentials are not exposed again.^2^
- Open Microsoft’s compromised-account page and start the sign-in helper.
- Enter the original email address or phone number.
- Follow the offered recovery steps.
- If shown a password recovery choice, select Forgot my password, then I think someone else is using my Microsoft account.^3^
- If the unfamiliar email or phone prevents verification, use the Sign-in Helper offered by Microsoft.
Prepare:
- Your original Microsoft email address
- Old passwords
- A working contact email
- Minecraft/Microsoft order number, purchase date, amount, and payment method
- Xbox gamertag and frequently used Xbox console hardware ID, if applicable
- Devices and locations previously used to sign in
- Do not create another Microsoft account using the old address as a recovery method. A new account is separate and will not contain the Minecraft purchase attached to the compromised account.
Important limitation
If two-step verification had been enabled and none of its verification methods remain accessible, Microsoft states that support cannot bypass it, issue a reset link, or manually change the account details.^4^
If the Sign-in Helper offers support contact, provide the purchase receipt and all historical account details. Support agents cannot directly override account security, but the helper can route the case to the available support option.^2^
After access is restored
- Change the password to a new, unique password.
- Open Microsoft account → Security → Review activity.
- Mark unknown entries as This wasn’t me or select Secure your account.
- Remove unfamiliar recovery addresses, phone numbers, connected accounts, and forwarding rules.
- Add a current recovery email or phone number and enable Microsoft Authenticator or another strong sign-in method.^5^
- Sign out of the Minecraft Launcher, then sign back in with the recovered Microsoft account.
