For Power Automate for desktop, there are two supported ways to create a testing setup for desktop flows:

    1. Use the built-in test case feature in Power Automate for desktop
      • Requires Power Automate for desktop version 2.54 or later.
      • Requires a Power Automate Premium license.
      • In Power Automate for desktop, go to Tests in the left navigation.
      • Select + New > Test case.
      • Enter a name, select the desktop flow to test, and select Create.
      • In the test case designer, add:
        • Test a desktop flow to run the full flow, or
        • Test a subflow of a desktop flow to test a specific local subflow.
      • Add an Assert action to validate expected results, for example:
        • %Sum = 25%
        • %Total > 0%
        • %Status contains 'Success'%
    2. Use a hosted machine if a separate machine-based test environment is needed
      • Hosted machines let teams build, test, and run attended and unattended desktop flows without setting up a physical machine.
      • Hosted machines are created through the Power Automate portal.
      • Power Automate provisions a Windows machine and registers it to the environment.
      • This is useful when a dedicated test machine is needed instead of testing on a local device.

If the goal is only to validate flows during development, the fastest path is:

    1. Open Power Automate for desktop.
    2. Create the desktop flow.
    3. Open Tests.
    4. Create a Test case.
    5. Add Test a desktop flow and Assert actions.
    6. Run and debug the test directly in Power Automate for desktop.

If temporary input data is needed during testing, default values can be assigned to variables before running the flow, then removed afterward.

    Hello Marcus Sutton,

    Thank you for your question.

Based on my research, the following Microsoft documentation explains how to create and manage test cases for Power Automate Desktop flows: Create and manage test cases for desktop flows | Microsoft Learn

The article covers the prerequisites, creating test cases, testing desktop flows or subflows, validating outputs with assertions, and reviewing test results. Please note that this functionality requires Power Automate for desktop version 2.54 or later and a Power Automate Premium license.

For more specific guidance about designing a separate testing environment for your desktop flows, I recommend posting your question in the dedicated Power Automate section of the Microsoft Power Platform Community: Microsoft Power Platform Community | Power Automate

    User's image

That community focuses specifically on Power Automate, including Power Automate Desktop, and has specialists with more experience in flow development, testing, environments, licensing, and deployment scenarios.

When creating the post, it would be helpful to explain whether you need a separate Power Platform environment, a test machine or virtual machine, or structured test cases for an existing desktop flow.

I hope these resources point you in the right direction.

    Kind regards,
