Please help to check if ASN can receive any non-WMS items from the mobile devices? If not, can you provide me a document about it. I mean to receive the ASN via the D365 dynamics on web instead of mobile devices

Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!

Thank you for the clarification and detailed investigation.

Currently, the standard inbound ASN functionality in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management is documented for items that are enabled for warehouse management processes (WMS).

Microsoft specifically states in Import inbound ASNs through data entities:

“Inbound ASN import applies only to items that are enabled for warehouse management processes (WMS).”

The same documentation also states that, before an ASN can be received, the related purchase order or inbound shipment order must already be registered in the system.

This is an important distinction because the documented requirement applies to the inbound ASN process itself, rather than only to receiving through the Warehouse Management mobile app. Therefore, using the Dynamics 365 web client instead of a mobile device does not remove the WMS requirement for the standard inbound ASN process.

The confusion is understandable because Dynamics 365 provides several different ways to receive inventory.

For WMS-enabled items, an ASN can provide information about the incoming shipment, including its items, quantities, packaging, and packing structure. This information can then be used as part of the warehouse receiving process.

Microsoft also documents license plate receiving through the Warehouse Management mobile app. In that scenario, a warehouse worker scans an incoming license plate, and Dynamics 365 uses the information from the ASN to register the inventory.

However, the mobile app is not the reason for the WMS requirement. The Microsoft documentation for the inbound ASN itself explicitly limits the standard inbound ASN import process to WMS-enabled items.

For the scenario you described, I would therefore not recommend trying to receive the non-WMS item through an ASN in the Dynamics 365 web client as an alternative to the mobile device.

Instead, for a non-WMS item, I recommend using the applicable standard purchase order receiving process rather than the inbound ASN/Warehouse Management receiving process. If using ASN functionality for these items is a business requirement, the warehouse and item configuration should first be reviewed to determine whether those items are intended to participate in WMS processes.

For reference, the most relevant Microsoft documentation is:

Microsoft Learn:

Import inbound ASNs through data entities - Supply Chain Management | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn

You can check the Important note near the beginning of the article, which explicitly states that inbound ASN import applies only to WMS-enabled items.

Microsoft provides the same WMS requirement for ASNs imported as despatch advice messages:

Microsoft Learn:

Import inbound ASNs as despatch advice messages - Supply Chain Management | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn

That documentation states that despatch advice messages apply only to items enabled for warehouse management processes (WMS).

For comparison, Microsoft documents the mobile receiving process here:

Microsoft Learn:

License plate receiving via the Warehouse Management mobile app - Supply Chain Management | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn

I recommend checking whether the affected item is enabled for warehouse management processes (WMS).

If the item is not WMS-enabled and your requirement is specifically to receive that item through an ASN from the Dynamics 365 web client, the current Microsoft documentation does not document that as a standard inbound ASN scenario.

Because your requirement is specifically related to Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management and Warehouse Management business-process functionality, I would recommend posting the scenario in the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Community for further product-specific guidance.

Microsoft Q&A covers a broad range of Microsoft technical products and scenarios, whereas the Dynamics 365 Community focuses specifically on Dynamics 365 products and business application scenarios. Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management specialists and community experts there are better positioned to review your exact warehouse, item, ASN and receiving configuration and determine whether another supported process is available for your business requirement.

You can post your question here:

Dynamics 365 Community: Find Answers | Microsoft Dynamics 365 Community

When posting there, I suggest including your Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management version, whether the warehouse is WMS-enabled, whether the affected item is WMS-enabled, and whether the ASN is associated with a purchase order, transfer order, or inbound shipment order. This should help the Dynamics 365 specialists evaluate the scenario without requiring additional clarification.

I hope this helps clarify that the documented limitation is related to WMS eligibility for the inbound ASN process, rather than simply whether receiving is performed through the web client or a mobile device.

Non-WMS items can be received in the Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management web client; use Arrival overview/item arrival journals to register stocked items, then post the Product receipt against the purchase order.

An ASN is advance shipment information, not the final inventory receipt. Dynamics 365 can preregister ASN details such as quantities, shipment dates, and batch or serial numbers; the physical receipt is subsequently registered and posted. ^1^

The following process applies when the item and warehouse aren’t enabled for warehouse management processes (WMS). ^2^

Option 1: Receive from Arrival overview

    1. In the Dynamics 365 web client, go to: Inventory management > Inbound orders > Arrival overview.
    2. Filter by the relevant warehouse, expected receipt date, vendor, or purchase-order reference.
    3. Select the expected receipt lines associated with the shipment/ASN.
    4. Select Start arrival.
      • Dynamics 365 creates an item arrival journal containing the selected order lines.
    5. Review the journal lines and adjust the actual received quantities.
    6. Post the item arrival journal.
    7. Go to Journals > Product receipt ready journals.
    8. Select the journal, and then select Functions > Product receipt.
    9. Enter the supplier’s product receipt or packing-slip number and select OK.

The arrival journal registers the inventory and updates on-hand quantities; posting the product receipt separately updates the purchase order and adds the physical cost. ^3^

Option 2: Create the item arrival journal manually

If the ASN receipt does not appear in Arrival overview:

    1. Go to Inventory management > Journal entries > Item arrival > Item arrival.
    2. Select New.
    3. Enter:
      • Name — the applicable item arrival journal name.
      • Packing slip — the vendor packing-slip identifier; it must be unique.
      • Number — the purchase order being received.
    4. Select OK.
    5. Select Functions > Create lines.
    6. Set Initialize quantity:
      • Yes for the full outstanding quantity.
      • No when quantities must be entered for a partial delivery.
    7. Review and adjust the generated lines.
    8. Select Post, and then select OK.
    9. Select Functions > Product receipt and complete the posting.

This is the documented web-client procedure specifically for non-WMS items and warehouses. ^2^

Alternative: register directly from the purchase order

For an individual purchase order, the web client also supports:

    1. Open the purchase order.
    2. Use the Registration action to mark stocked products as Registered.
    3. Use Product receipt to mark them as Received.

If the lines are not stocked or use procurement categories, they normally do not pass through warehouse arrival registration. Post the receipt directly with the purchase order’s Product receipt action, based on the ordered quantity. ^1^

Therefore, the Warehouse Management mobile app is not required for this non-WMS scenario. Its ASN/license-plate receiving flows apply to warehouse-management operations; non-WMS stocked receipts use the web-based arrival journal or purchase-order registration process.
