Welcome to Microsoft Q&A!
Thank you for the clarification and detailed investigation.
Currently, the standard inbound ASN functionality in Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management is documented for items that are enabled for warehouse management processes (WMS).
Microsoft specifically states in Import inbound ASNs through data entities:
“Inbound ASN import applies only to items that are enabled for warehouse management processes (WMS).”
The same documentation also states that, before an ASN can be received, the related purchase order or inbound shipment order must already be registered in the system.
This is an important distinction because the documented requirement applies to the inbound ASN process itself, rather than only to receiving through the Warehouse Management mobile app. Therefore, using the Dynamics 365 web client instead of a mobile device does not remove the WMS requirement for the standard inbound ASN process.
The confusion is understandable because Dynamics 365 provides several different ways to receive inventory.
For WMS-enabled items, an ASN can provide information about the incoming shipment, including its items, quantities, packaging, and packing structure. This information can then be used as part of the warehouse receiving process.
Microsoft also documents license plate receiving through the Warehouse Management mobile app. In that scenario, a warehouse worker scans an incoming license plate, and Dynamics 365 uses the information from the ASN to register the inventory.
However, the mobile app is not the reason for the WMS requirement. The Microsoft documentation for the inbound ASN itself explicitly limits the standard inbound ASN import process to WMS-enabled items.
For the scenario you described, I would therefore not recommend trying to receive the non-WMS item through an ASN in the Dynamics 365 web client as an alternative to the mobile device.
Instead, for a non-WMS item, I recommend using the applicable standard purchase order receiving process rather than the inbound ASN/Warehouse Management receiving process. If using ASN functionality for these items is a business requirement, the warehouse and item configuration should first be reviewed to determine whether those items are intended to participate in WMS processes.
For reference, the most relevant Microsoft documentation is:
Microsoft Learn:
Import inbound ASNs through data entities - Supply Chain Management | Dynamics 365 | Microsoft Learn
You can check the Important note near the beginning of the article, which explicitly states that inbound ASN import applies only to WMS-enabled items.
Microsoft provides the same WMS requirement for ASNs imported as despatch advice messages:
Microsoft Learn:
That documentation states that despatch advice messages apply only to items enabled for warehouse management processes (WMS).
For comparison, Microsoft documents the mobile receiving process here:
Microsoft Learn:
I recommend checking whether the affected item is enabled for warehouse management processes (WMS).
If the item is not WMS-enabled and your requirement is specifically to receive that item through an ASN from the Dynamics 365 web client, the current Microsoft documentation does not document that as a standard inbound ASN scenario.
Because your requirement is specifically related to Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management and Warehouse Management business-process functionality, I would recommend posting the scenario in the Microsoft Dynamics 365 Community for further product-specific guidance.
Microsoft Q&A covers a broad range of Microsoft technical products and scenarios, whereas the Dynamics 365 Community focuses specifically on Dynamics 365 products and business application scenarios. Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management specialists and community experts there are better positioned to review your exact warehouse, item, ASN and receiving configuration and determine whether another supported process is available for your business requirement.
You can post your question here:
Dynamics 365 Community: Find Answers | Microsoft Dynamics 365 Community
When posting there, I suggest including your Dynamics 365 Supply Chain Management version, whether the warehouse is WMS-enabled, whether the affected item is WMS-enabled, and whether the ASN is associated with a purchase order, transfer order, or inbound shipment order. This should help the Dynamics 365 specialists evaluate the scenario without requiring additional clarification.
I hope this helps clarify that the documented limitation is related to WMS eligibility for the inbound ASN process, rather than simply whether receiving is performed through the web client or a mobile device.
