Hello everyone! I am currently using a personal acc for microsoft teams. i would like to know if it is possible to access and use microsoft flip to create public discussion topics with a personal acc. Are there any specific feature limitations or different step required compared to an educational acc? Thankyou for your answer all ^^

Microsoft Flip cannot be used with a personal Microsoft Teams account: the standalone Flip service retired on September 30, 2024, and its remaining video-recording functionality is available through assignments in Microsoft Teams for Education.^1^

Limitations with a personal account

Teams for personal use does not provide the education workflow needed to create Flip video assignments or discussion topics. It is primarily organized around chats, meetings, calls, contacts, and personal communities.^2^

It also cannot provide the requested public, searchable discussion space. Microsoft has discontinued public communities in Teams for personal use; communities can no longer be set as public and searchable.^3^

Joining the Teams Insider Program or enabling preview features does not change the account type or make the education-only Flip workflow available.

If an eligible school provides an education account

Sign in with the school-issued work or school account—not the personal Microsoft account—and use:

  1. Open the applicable class team.
  2. Select Assignments.
  3. Select Create → New assignment.
  4. Below the instructions box, select + New.
  5. Select Flip video recording.
  6. Record, review, name, and attach the video to the assignment.

The recording is uploaded as a .webm file and is limited to five minutes.^4^

This is not a full replacement for the former public Flip topic experience. It is an assignment-oriented feature inside a class team, with access controlled by the school and class membership.

Education access normally requires an eligible institution and a verified school account. A personal or freelance email cannot independently obtain Microsoft 365 A1; the institution must qualify and assign the education license.^5^

Practical alternatives with a personal account

For a non-public discussion among invited participants, use a Teams personal group chat, meeting, or private community and share recorded videos or files there. For a genuinely public video-discussion forum, a different service designed for public communities is required; neither personal Teams nor the retired standalone Flip service currently provides that workflow.
