Linking OneNote Class Notebooks to Teams for collaborative note-taking and organization
The standalone Microsoft Flip service is retired, so a personal Microsoft account cannot create legacy Flip discussion topics; the remaining Flip recording feature is available within assignments in Microsoft Teams for Education.^1^
What you can use with a personal account
The closest supported option is a Community in Microsoft Teams for personal use:
- Open Teams and select Communities.
- Select Create Community.
- Choose Create my own or select a template.
- Add a channel for each discussion topic.
- Open the community or channel, select Post or Post in Channel, enter the topic, and publish it. Members can reply to the post.^2^ ^3^
This is not a public, searchable forum:
- Communities are private by default and no longer appear in searches or recommendations.
- People participate through invitations or shared join links; owners can enable Request to Join for approval.
- Communities are unavailable to minors.
- Members must use Teams for personal use; work or school accounts cannot join a personal community.^4^
If “public” means that anyone with a link should be able to submit an answer, Microsoft Forms supports personal Microsoft accounts and can create surveys, quizzes, or polls. It collects individual responses, however, rather than providing Flip-style threaded video discussions.^5^
Differences with an education account
A personal Microsoft account is individually owned, whereas a work or school account is created and managed by an organization.^6^
With an eligible Teams for Education account, an educator can add a Flip recording to an assignment:
- Open a class team.
- Select Create → New Assignment.
- Under the instructions box, select + New.
- Select Flip video recording.
- Record, review, optionally trim or add music, select Next, and name the recording.
The recording is uploaded to the assignment as a .webm file and is limited to five minutes.^1^
This remaining feature is an assignment recording tool, not the former Flip experience for creating public discussion topics. Access requires a school-provided Teams for Education environment; a personal Teams subscription does not convert a personal account into an education account.
