How do I adjust safety settings? When I receive an email with an article of interest, when I click on it, it won’t download.

Hi,

When you click the article, what exactly happens?

In Outlook.com, there isn't a single safety setting that controls all email downloads. However, you can check the following settings to ensure that links and attachments are not being blocked.\

#1:

  1. If clicking an article does nothing, your browser may be blocking the pop-up or redirect.
  2. In Microsoft Edge, open edge://settings/content/popups.
  3. Allow pop-ups for Outlook.com and try again.

#2:

  1. Open the email and right-click the article link.
  2. Select Copy link.
  3. Paste it into a new browser tab and check whether the article opens.

I look forward to hearing from you to get the results of the troubleshooting.

If the issue is in Outlook on the web or Outlook.com, the download behavior is often controlled by the browser and by security protections in Outlook, Windows, or Edge.

    Try these steps:

    1. In Microsoft Edge, turn on the prompt to choose where files are saved:
      • Open Edge
      • Go to Settings > Downloads
      • Turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading
      • Download the attachment again and choose Save as
    2. Check whether Microsoft Defender SmartScreen is blocking the download:
      • Open Edge and go to edge://settings/privacy
      • Under Security, check whether Microsoft Defender SmartScreen is on
      • If a legitimate file is being blocked, turn it off only for testing, then turn it back on
    3. Check Windows Security for blocked downloads:
      • Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history
      • Look for a recent blocked item related to the attachment
    4. If the file downloads but will not open, check whether Windows blocked it:
      • Open File Explorer
      • Right-click the file > Properties
      • On the General tab, if there is a security message, select Unblock > Apply > OK
      • Only unblock files from trusted sources
    5. If pictures or article content inside the email are blocked in classic Outlook:
      • Go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings
      • Clear Don't download pictures automatically in HTML e-mail messages or RSS items
      • For a trusted sender, right-click a blocked item in the message and add the sender or domain to Safe Senders List
    6. If downloads fail only in Outlook on the web:
      • Try an InPrivate window or another browser
      • Try a different network, such as a mobile hotspot
      • If it works there, the current browser cache, proxy, antivirus, or network may be blocking the download
    7. If the attachment type itself is considered unsafe by Outlook, Outlook may block it by design. In Exchange environments, an administrator can change attachment security behavior. Advanced registry changes are also possible in some Outlook versions, but this is a higher-risk change and should be used only when necessary because incorrect registry edits can cause serious problems.
