On 27-28 October 2026 My Microsoft Photos app stopped working properly. I uninstalled and was not able to reinstall the app again. Below is my system information.

Windows 11 Pro 23H2, build 22631.6199

Photos package: 2608.1401.18.0

Installation error: 0x80073CF6

Underlying error: 0x80004001 — Not implemented

Failing extension: windows.fileTypeAssociation.progIdGeneration

Photos worked until approximately 26–27 October 2026.

Store reset, DISM/SFC, removal, restart and WinGet installation

have not resolved it. Other Store apps update successfully.

If that command was unsuccessful, did you try downloading and installing the Photos Legacy app form the Microsoft Store on the link I provided.

Get-AppxPackage -AllUsers -Name Microsoft.Windows.Photos returns no results. Therefore, there is no InstallLocation for this command to re-register. Store and standalone installations fail during windows.fileTypeAssociation.progIdGeneration registration with error 0x80004001. What repair applies when no Photos package is registered?

I suggest you perform windows repair as mentioned in the link below. It says it preserve your files, apps and settings, but I still recommend you to backup your important data first.

After repair check if Microsoft photo app is back, of not then install it from Microsoft Store and check

The Ai solution is incorrect, you cannot use the Windows 11 ISO to perform an in-place repair/upgrade on Windows 11 on your hardware, because your 7th generation processor will block that.

If you are unable to reinstall the Photos app from the Store, open PowerShell by right clicking its icon and select 'Run as Administrator'.

Paste this into PowerShell and press Enter:

Get-AppxPackage -allusers Microsoft.Windows.Photos | Foreach {Add-AppxPackage -DisableDevelopmentMode -Register "$($_.InstallLocation)\AppXManifest.xml"}When that command completes, restart your PC and check if the Photos app is installed correctly.

If the Photos app is still not installed, are you able to install the Photos Legacy App from the Store:

PC Health Check confirms that my Intel Core i7-7700T processor is unsupported for Windows 11. Windows Update offers no newer release. Does your proposed in-place upgrade apply to this hardware without bypassing compatibility checks? If not, is there an officially available Microsoft Photos package compatible with my existing Windows installation?
