Switch the PC to the Dev Channel and check for a current Insider build; if Windows Update still offers nothing, use an Insider ISO for an in-place upgrade or perform a backed-up clean installation.
1. Try the current Dev Channel build
First, press Windows key + R, enter winver, and note whether the PC runs Windows 10 or Windows 11 and its OS build.
Then:
- Windows 11: Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program
- Windows 10: Settings > Update & Security > Windows Insider Program
- Select Dev Channel.
- Return to Windows Update and select Check for updates.
- Install the newest build offered and restart.
Microsoft documents this as the first recovery route for an expiring Insider build.^1^ The cited page uses Windows 10 menu names; Windows 11 places the Insider settings directly under Settings > Windows Update.
2. If no update appears, upgrade from an Insider ISO
Back up important files before proceeding.
- Download an appropriate ISO from the Windows Insider ISO page.
- In File Explorer, right-click the downloaded ISO and select Mount, or double-click it.
- Open the mounted drive and run setup.exe.
- If Setup offers Keep Windows settings, personal files, and apps, select it and continue.
- After installation, open Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program and check that the intended channel and account are selected.
This is the documented in-place-upgrade procedure.^2^
Only continue as an in-place upgrade if Setup actually offers the option to retain files and applications. If that option is unavailable, cancel Setup rather than assuming your data will be preserved.
3. If an in-place upgrade is unavailable
A clean installation is the remaining documented route:
- Copy personal files to an external drive or cloud storage.
- Create installation media from either the latest Windows Insider ISO or a normal Windows ISO if leaving the Insider Program.
- Boot from the media and install Windows.
- When Setup asks what to keep, choosing Nothing removes files, settings, and applications.
A clean installation erases the device, so verify the backup before starting. Microsoft documents clean installation as the fallback when an expired build cannot receive a newer build normally.^1^
If these options do not match what appears on the PC, provide the winver version/build, current Insider channel, and exact Windows Update error code. Those details determine which ISO and upgrade path are applicable.^3^
