Processes in Microsoft 365 for setting up Office apps, redeeming product keys, and activating licenses.
Start Word in Office Safe Mode, and if it still does not open, run an Online Repair of the complete Microsoft 365 or Office installation.
1. Test Word in Safe Mode
- Press Windows key + R.
- Type
winword /safe. - Select OK.
- If asked whether to start in Safe Mode, select Yes.
Safe Mode starts Word without additional extensions and customizations that can interfere with startup.^1^
- If Word opens: close it and start it normally. If the problem returns, an add-in or extension may be interfering with startup.
- If Word does not open: continue with the repair below.
For another Office application, use the appropriate Run command:
- Excel:
excel /safe - PowerPoint:
powerpnt /safe - Outlook:
outlook /safe
2. Repair Microsoft 365 or Office
You do not need to know your exact Office version. Look for an entry named Microsoft 365, Microsoft Office, or Microsoft Office 2016/2019/2021/2024.
Windows 11
- Right-click Start and select Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select the three dots beside it, then select Modify.
- Select Online Repair → Repair.
- Complete the instructions, then restart the computer.
Windows 10
- Right-click Start and select Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select Modify.
- Select Online Repair → Repair.
- Complete the instructions, then restart the computer.
If the installer instead displays Change your installation, select Repair and then Continue. Repairing this entry repairs the entire Office suite, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.^2^
After restarting, open Start, type Word, and select the Word application directly rather than opening a document. If Word still does nothing, note whether Microsoft 365 or Office appeared in Installed apps, and whether the repair displayed an error message or code; those details are needed to identify the next action.
