i had bought my lab top in California and then took it to my home in another state, I try to get online and then select connect. And without asking for a passcode I am put online, New computer fresh out of the box. Could it be that upon setup and giving certain information, it is enough to just have wifi passcode shared, then the code could have been also stored in the cloud?

If you use a Microsoft account to log into Windows on a previous device that was connected to your home router and you sync your settings to the cloud, then the WiFi password would be synced to your account and that would enable your new laptop to connect to that router without needing to insert a WiFi security key, or if your home router supports WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup) and you pressed the WPS button (small button with up/down arrows) on the router, that would also connect the laptop automatically to your router
