    Hi @Torrance Ferrell

    1. Corrupted Font Cache (Most Common)

Windows caches fonts, and if the cache becomes corrupted, applications can display strange symbols, circles, or missing characters.

    Fix:

    1. Press Win + R
    2. Type services.msc
    3. Stop:
      • Windows Font Cache Service
        • Windows Presentation Foundation Font Cache 3.0.0.0 (if present)
        1. Navigate to:
              C:\Windows\ServiceProfiles\LocalService\AppData\Local

        1. Delete files beginning with:
              FontCache

        1. Restart Windows.

    2. Corrupted System Fonts

If only certain fonts are affected, Paint may be trying to use a damaged font.

    Check:

    • Open WordPad or Notepad.
    • Try the same font that glitches in Paint.
    • If the problem appears there too, the font itself is likely corrupted.

Repair system files: Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run:

    BAT

    DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

    sfc /scannow

    Restart after both complete.

    3. Graphics Driver Issue

Paint in recent Windows versions uses hardware acceleration.

    Test:

    • Update your display driver from Device Manager.
    • Or temporarily install the latest Intel/NVIDIA/AMD driver from the manufacturer.

If the issue disappears after updating, it was likely a rendering problem.

    4. Clear Paint App Data

If the issue occurs only in Paint:

    1. Settings → Apps → Installed Apps
    2. Microsoft Paint → Advanced Options
    3. Click:
      • Repair
        • If needed, Reset

    5. Display Scaling Bug

    Try:

    1. Settings → System → Display
    2. Set Scale to 100%
    3. Sign out and back in

Some font rendering issues appear at custom scaling levels.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

Looks like a glitch to me. You should try resetting Paint to see if it fixes the problem.

    • Sign out your account in Paint
    • Go to Windows Settings > Apps > Installed apps > Paint
    • Click the three dots > Advanced options
    • Click on Terminate then Reset
    • Open the app and sign in again

If the issue persists, it could be a bug as there is a similar case posted recently identical to this. In this case, you should report this by clicking the Send feedback option > Report a problem in the app's settings.

Same bug here, Paint 11.2605.81.0 on Windows 11 25H2 (build 26200.9711). Screenshot attached, I blanked out the canvas content.

My case is the mirror of @Tycoon 's: the labels break on my laptop screen and are fine on my external monitor.

    Setup:

Laptop with Intel Graphics (driver 32.0.101.8991) and NVIDIA GeForce RTX 5070 Laptop GPU (driver 32.0.16.1692)

Laptop screen: 2560x1600, normally at 150% scale, driven by the Intel GPU

External monitor: 2560x1440, normally at 100% scale, driven by the NVIDIA GPU, set as the main display

What I see with those normal scales:

Paint started on the laptop screen: everything looks normal. Dragged to the external monitor and back: now it is broken on the laptop screen.

Paint started on the external monitor, dragged to the laptop screen: normal. Back to the external monitor: normal. To the laptop screen again: broken.

Dragged back to the external monitor: normal again. On the external monitor it always looks fine.

So the first visit to the laptop screen is fine, and it breaks when the window comes back to it a second time.

All text and icons are affected. Menu and ribbon labels turn into short dashes, tool icons turn into random symbols, and the color swatches turn into colored dashes. When I tried to close Paint, the Save / Don't save / Cancel buttons showed solid bars instead of text. The first time it happened they showed round symbols, like the white circles in the question. The window layout and the image on the canvas stay correct, so only text and icons are drawn wrong.

    Scale tests:

Both screens at 100%: Paint renders fine.

    Both screens at 150%: fine.

Scales swapped, laptop screen at 100% and external at 150%: broken on the laptop screen again, now at 100%.

So it only happens when the two screens have different scales, and it is always the laptop screen that breaks, whatever its scale. That screen is driven by the Intel GPU and is not my main display, so my guess is that one of those two decides which side breaks. In @Tycoon 's case it was the external monitor that broke. Setting Paint's GPU preference to High performance (NVIDIA) did not help in my case.

Update Paint through Microsoft Store first, then repair the app; if the white-circle glyphs remain, reset and reinstall Paint in that order.

    1. Update Paint and Windows

The screenshot shows Paint 11.2605.81.0, but Microsoft has not published this white-circle symptom as a known Paint or Windows 11 26H2 issue. The Paint release notes direct users to Feedback Hub for unlisted problems.^1^ ^2^

    1. Open Microsoft Store.
    2. Select Library → Get updates.
    3. Install any Paint or Microsoft Store update, then reopen Paint.
    4. Go to Settings → Windows Update → Check for updates, install available updates, and restart Windows.^3^

    2. Repair Paint

Repair refreshes the app installation while retaining its data.^4^

    1. Close Paint.
    2. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
    3. Find Paint, select its ⋯ menu, and choose Advanced options.
    4. Select Repair.
    5. Reopen Paint and check whether the labels render normally.^5^

    3. Reset Paint if repair does not work

Reset deletes Paint’s app data and preferences, although image files saved elsewhere remain separate.

From the same Paint → Advanced options page:

    1. Select Reset.
    2. Confirm Reset.
    3. Start Paint and test its Settings page again.^4^

    4. Reinstall Paint

If resetting does not correct the glyphs:

    1. Open Settings → Apps → Installed apps.
    2. Open Paint’s ⋯ menu and select Uninstall.
    3. Open Microsoft Store → Library.
    4. Find Paint and select Install.^3^

If text is corrupted outside Paint too

If the same circles or damaged text appear in Settings, Notepad, or other applications, treat it as a Windows text-rendering or user-profile problem rather than an isolated Paint installation:

    • Create a temporary local Windows account and test Paint there. If Paint works in that account, the problem is likely limited to the original profile.
    • If text merely looks blurry rather than being replaced with circles, verify Settings → System → Display → Display resolution is set to Recommended. A font-cache rebuild is another possible system-wide text remedy.^6^
    • If several packaged Windows apps malfunction in both accounts, use Settings → System → Recovery and consider the Windows repair-reinstall option. Back up important files first.^7^

If only Paint remains affected after reinstalling, press Win+F and file the report under Apps → Paint, attaching the screenshot and Paint version shown on its About page.^1^
